THE DAILY Maine Cattle. TUBERCOLOSIS AGAIN INFECTING THE CHOICEST HERDS, A Maine despatch reports that it has | come to the knowledge of the board ot agriculture, that tubercolosis has again made its appearance in Maine. This it strikes a splendid herd of thoroughbred Herefords, owned by J. W. Lord, of Ken nebunk. herd of fifteen animals are infected. A splendid cow, for which $600 was paid about three years since, was slaughtered a short time ago, be order of the cattle com- missioners, and found badly diseased, and Saturday, the commissioners were again to visit the herd, to determine the fate of the remaining animals, after making a thorongh examination. Mr. Lord’s barn, in which the animals have been kept, is considered one of the best arranged, for the comfort and health of neat stock, in the state. ~2O+e Keep Away. The proprietor of a high-toned drinking saloon in New York signed the pledge and closed Kis dram-shop. On learning that a company of lads had organized themselves into a temperance society, he went to them and gave them some of his experience as a rumseller:—‘*1 sold liquor,” said he, ** eleven years—long enough for me to see the beginning and end of its effect. I have seen a man take his tirst glass in my place, and afterwards find the grave of a suicide. I have seen man after man, wealthy and educated, come into my saloon who now cannot buy his dinner. I recall 20 custom- ers, worth from one to five thousand dol- lars, who are now without money, place or friends. He warned the boys against en- tering the saloon on any pretext. He said that he had seen a young fellow, a member of a temperance society, come in witha friend and wait while he drank. No, no he weuld say when asked to drink, | never touch it lhanks all the same. ’reseutly rather than seem churlish, he would take a glass of cider or harmless lemonade. The lemonade was nothing, said he, but I knew how it would end. The only safety, boys, for any one, no matter how strong his re- solutions, is outside the dvor of the saloon. I rn News iu Brief. The London Times denies that Britain is losing her foreign trade. She carries three-fourths of her own vast commerce, over one-half of that of ‘the United States, Portugal and Holland, nearly one-half of that of Russia and Italy, and more than one-third of that of France and Germany. There is general regret among the advo- cates of Irish home rule that Gladstone has decided not to to Rome. Cardinal Manning and other eminent Cathoiics and home rulers pleaded with the ex-premier, and urged that his presence in Rome, and the circumstances ot his being received by the Pope, would have an excellent effect in favor of the Jrish cause. Gladstone was obdurate. Arabs have made the evacuation of the coast by the Germans the first condition to the release of the missionaries who have beem captured by them.
