'l‘lirec uarters of an hour after casting ofl‘ from the ‘iiglct, the two most formidable ofthc large junks were boarded and carried by the Powliatan’e launches, and other boats. A few uicn beiii left on board. the lioats pushed on without clay toward the other large jiinks, which were then captured in detail. Following onward, Captain Fcllowes, with Assistant Sur- geon Wilson, in the gig, got under the guns of a. large junk, and was engaged for n words of ten minutes pouring in mus etry, w on Lieu- tenant Rolando with the Powhntan’s first launch cane up, and throw in heavy vollcye—tben giv- ing three cheers, boarde . A hand-to-band fight of the most sen uinary description here took place, some of t e crew flying olow, others overboard ; the sea appear- ing literally covered with Chinese heads and cocoa nuts (the ruse of flinging the latter over- board before jumping themselvee, ehoivin some retncditation. Cu lain Fellowee in his alongside (some of tie ltattlei-'a marines being on board the junk forward) was just telling Lieut. Rolando of his fear that some of the deeperadoes would blow the junk up, when an exp onion took place, taking with it all on board and cspsising the Rattler-’a gig. With much dilliculty those of the Powlintau‘e launch‘: crew reniainin on board succeeded in rescuing nine of their comrades and the Rat- tler‘: gig’s crew ; Captain Fellowes being haul- ed on board with his head bleeding from contu- sions by the falling spars. Lieut. Rolando was blown to some height into the air, and narrow- ly escaped death nl'terwarde, whilo swimming to his boat, by the descent of a crowd of spears from the falling stern of the burning blown up junk. Nine of the l’owli:itan‘e crew were taken out oftho water, variously wounded (as shown 5. given a. very eiitt-i-tainiiig as well as iiistructive book on the sulijcci; but there is one noble fen- turo in this great enterprise to which we must refer. It is it very (‘nlnl‘.l(in subjcctofconiplaint. and one not altogetlicr unfounded, that the present nrrangeincnts of society afford so few employ- iiiente for women ; it is usually supposed that they are almost entirely shut up to the needle and domestic service. A visit to the cstii.blisli- inont of Messrs. Harper and Brother convinced us that there are modes of employment for oung women voiiipnring favorably with the various iiicclianii-zil occupations followed by the stronger sex, while it glance at the appearance and manner of the employers would convince any observer, that these occupations involve no sacrifice of delicacy or self-respect; we were, therefore, induced to collect it few statistics in regard to female labor in this establishment. In the press-room. we found that the employ- ment wne given to twenty-two girls ; their work is performed standing, and consists in placing the sheets of paper upon the presses in such a osition as to be reached by the machinery of the press. All the heavy work and that involv- ing contact with the ink and machinery, is per- formed by men, of whom about an equal num- her are enguved in this room. In the folding-room, one hundred and forty- four girls are employed, and no men. ' be em ployment is sedentary, but is perfectly neat and wholesome, and is in nowise as tiresome as the labor of the needle; in fact, there is hardly a mechanical employment performed by men which, for its own sake, would be as desirable. In the sewing-room, eighty iris are employ- ed ; the labor of sewing books is for less confin- ing to the body and trying to the eyes.tlinn any other manner of using the " feminine imple- ment, " the needle. The gilding-room gives employment to thir- teen girls; on the work is free from all un- pleasaiit accom uniments. _ Here, then, in this one establishment, em- ployment is given to two hundred and fifty-n_ine~ bung women, most of whom had that quiet, ladyliko manner, which showed they had been well brought up and educated. Some, we Im- in the schedule.) 'l‘wo were gone altogether. and one of tho \\'tillnlliiil died next day on board . the Higleti. i\lr. The music of'iliei~e insects, which is confined to ilieiiiale. is produced by a singular apparatus, that consists of several wiIidiii5_z cells under the body, separaird by different iiienibranes, and ope- ning externally by two iiarrnw valves. In the centre of these cells is coiiiaini-d a scaly sonornue triangle, and exterior to them are use vigoroui niiisclrs. by ilie action of which the cells are sup- plied wiih air through one of the valves, and so powerfully reverberate it against the triangle as to produce the notes of which the grasshopper’: song consists, and which is so loud, ihat a single insect hung in ii cage has almost drowned the voices of a large coinpnny.—Jolm Masai: Good. -——oooo RUISIAN 'l‘iioi-Iiiis.—Yesierday we had the pleasure of looking at some Russian tro hiea, brought from England by the High Sheri , who obtained them from his son, Dr. \Vm._Cerbett, at present in the Isle of Wight recruiting his health. They we.ie taken from a Russian soldier, on the 7ili of June last, and coiiaisia efa musket, eart- onche, bayonet, dirk knife and cap; The musket ' stamped on the ateck with the doubleheaded Eagle of Russia, and on other places with the figures 1848. It evidently saw good service, as the point on the stock was worn off, and the brain with which it is liberally mounted, well polished. The bayonet is not as large an those used by British troops. It is slender and seemingly intended to run through a fellow with the slightest pressure and in smooth style. The cartouc-he box but a hole in it through which the ball epediliat killed the wearer. murderous looking knife was suspended from the carioiiche box well stained, buih handle and blade, with blood. The cap is a foraging one, old and greasy with the leiiere " I. K, P.” worked in front on the band. These were all taken from the dead body of ilio soldier.
