Arsenault i ON PARIS EXPOSITl0N~ Some Interesting Points- The Attendance and the Canadian Exhibit. Rev. J. A. McDonald of Miscouche and P. P. Arsenault of Mount Carmel were in the city yesterday. Both gentleman re- turned froman extendedvisit to Europe on Monday last. In conversation with Father McDonald he said that the trip was amost enjoyable one and interesting in the extreme. \Ve left Halifax on April 16th for Eng- land and arrived in Liverpool; visiiillg all the English cities of importance such as Stratford-on-Avon. a town in Warwick- shire the birthplace of Shakespeare and which contains the church of the Holy Trinity. Shakespear's home has since been made into a museum. On the way we decided tovisit the Eternal City before taking in the Paris Exposition. After spending some time in the South Of France we went on to Rome where we ar- rived on May l7th and while there had the privilege of witnessing the canonization ceremony in historic St. Peters. To give some idea of the event, Father McDonald said that 80,000 people were present in the Church. Upon that occasion the famous Sistine choir was heard. The choir is acknowledged to be the best in the world. The vastness of St. Peters does not dawn upon the visitor until he has frequented ita few times and has gone up into the dome from which the most wonderful view in the world can be obtained. The Vatican library is. as is well known the most complete in existence, contain- ing the Vatican parchment and other par- chments that can only be found in the famous library. The Vatican library was founded in 144'). The Vatican manuscript has been t`1ere since the foundation of the library. It contains the entire Bible in the original Greek. The paintings contained in the library are also the most rare and costly in exis- tence. We visited the little Protestant buying ground in which are interred the remains of John Keats and Percy Bysshe Shelley. John Keat§_died in Rome in 1821. It will be remembered that Endymion was his principal work. He died at the early age of Z6 years. Shelley was born in 1792 and was drowned on the coast of Italy in 1822, and was only 30 years of age. While in Rome we saw the heart of O'Connell, the great Irish orator which is preserved in the Irish College. We resided at the Canadian College which is considered the finest foreign building. There are 4') students and priests at present in the in- stution preparing for Professors. Among the number we met Father Sinnott, a native of Morell. In all we spent ten very pleasant days, all the time being taken up in sight seeing. We visited Co:no,the birth place of Volta, the famous physicist and electrician, the inventor of the electroscope and voltaic battery. After leaving Como we crossed the front- ier into Switzerland and went to Lt-he summit of one of the peaks of the Alps near Como. On the following day we dined under the Alps. From there we visited the Rhine which is known as the principal river in Germany, and in fact one of the most noted rivers in the world.~ It forms the boundary between Switzerland and Liech- tenstein. Its length is about 800 miles. The Paris Exposition is a wonderful affair and the report largely circulated that it is unsuccessful is a ruse. The at- tendance is far in excess of the world’s fair recently held at Chicago. On one day while there we were told that the at- tendax ce wa.s 516.000. It is said that 400 (D0 was the largest attendance on any one day at the world's fair. The guide books of the Paris Exhibition are said to be not as good as those issued by the manage- ment of the Worl°°k. “Tho Gaudi# m1' lathe South _ African Wu." n vmggu, - rrsxul Nearlrevery row; mone ~~ me fe- _N 3:3’ 'mwah have rela- __ 0 have boys Eghdng under the British ang on :lizogbgz Continent.” All are iazemelihintereaea in mg ‘rm We there. an will vm mu. ony snnflu u Written by a celebntedjnilitary authority.
