Truckmen lCn Cravel Project Strike The Department of Highways would have "nothing to do" ilvith striking truckmen in King's Coun- ty, highway officials here said last night. The men, it was explained. went on strike for higher ram for gravel hauling on a 14 1-2 mile project carried on by the Provin- cial Government from Dlngivelrs Mills to Morell. Not all truckmen on the project were on strike, it was learned. Those involved were hauling from n graiel pit near Montague. The rate set by the government wns$520 per trip of 20 miles one way for a fr r cubic yard load with an aci- cltimal rate par yard mile where the trip was beyond the 20 mile limit Truckmcn hauling from another pit. at Bedford, were paid $4.80 per trip, with the some clause for ad- ditional milrs. The difference in rroe was believed to equalize the payment as some of the road fro-m the Bsdlford pit was over pavement. The men hauling from the Mon- tague pit were using almost all dirt roads and on some round trips of forty miles they used nine gallons of gasoline, they said. Following the strike ‘by the gravel truckers other men hauling frcm on asphalt plant to the east- em end of the Sourls-Charlottc- town highway joined in the walk- out. lost night, however, it was unofficially reported the asphalt truckmen would return to work to- L. B. McMillan Deputy Minister of Hlghnvs said last night the principle of the truckmcn trying in hold up thc government was “all wrong." The department. would have nothing to soy to the strik- ers, he said. They ivcre told they could ltcul or not, just, as they pleased. The project in which the dispute over rates occurred 1s the only on:- o.’ fourtern gravel contracts hand- lcd directly by the government, Tho other proiects were let. on contract.
