Then follow the rich bles- 51113; bestowed on such as love Him. The Father loves them, Christ loves men-l and will manifest Himself to 111cm. The various points of our subject will be enlarged upon under our division!- we will consider our text under (he following divisions, and pray for thl hell‘! ind guiddnce of the Holy 5911'"- I. They have the commandments of Jesus, and keep them. 11. The rich blessings that follow to those who keep Christ's com- niandments. 1. They have the commandments of God, not only the ten given at Mount Sinai, but also Christ's new commandment, to love one another, and also all the commands He has givea in His blessed word ,all of which are given for instruction in loft without light in a dark and sinful world. The light of this world is Jesus.‘ The dments of God are great lights in this world, showing men their danger, and pointing them He|venward..lt is in mercy ihat the wn- andments are given to us, that they may lead us in the right and holy ways of God that load to everlasting happiness. The heathen have no such help as ls given us in the commandments of God, and are therefore in heathen darkness, and will continue in sin rind darkness till the‘ gospel comes to them with all its blessed light nnd life. Christlanized countries are greatly; blessed with gospel light, and the salvation that accompanies it. With reference to the com- mandments of God, we will speak oi two classes, and these all in Christian countries: yea, in the Church. Our reference is to those lint hear the gospel. ,, . There is a class that hears and many of whom know the comm d- ments of God, and speak well of them, and yet have no interest in what they hear. The Gospel mes- sages fall without effect on their ("115- 311611 PEOPIe hear to condem- nation. They may go to Church and perhaps send their children to Sabbath School, and, may be, praise the sermon and the Sabbath school, nnd wonder that people having such advantages, are not better. They will apply the truth abund- antly to their neighbors, but never rhemselves. They can see faults in themselves. There is also a. class are too hard, and some of these are in Christian communities. I have; hoard some railing against the Cate- 1 chLsm of the Presbyterian church,' and saying it was too hard and they did not like it, and yet it‘ contains nothing but what is in full agree- nicnt with the word of God. The fact is these people do not like God or His word. . There were such people in the 1110's of our Lord Jesus Christ: Then “ Jesus said unto them, verily, verily, I soy unto you, except ye cat the flesh of the son of man, and drink Ills blood, ye have no life in you.- Jno. 6 : 58. Mimi’ therefore of His dlsclplos, wllon they heard this, said: This ls. an hard saying; who can hear it '."' iJllO. 6 :60). From that time many 0i His disciples went back and, walked no more with Him. (Jno. ll :66.) Christ's language was too spiritual for them. They were car- iifliiy minded. _ As it was in the time of our Sav- iour. so it is in our time; anything Spiritual is too hard for the earnally minded. Many expect to go to Heaven on the broad way that leads 1o everlasting misery. They hate the rrsiraining of their camel minds by the word of God, and the exhorte- uons of His people. They turn their backs on God's servants, and will 1MP company with them no more. They will seek the companythat suits them, and who are of their ""1" WHY 0f thinking and acting. Blessed is the man to whom the Lord imputeth not iniquity and irl whose spirit there is no guilc. Ps. 32:2. The Godly are a gulls- less and sincere people. They say with Paul: the Commandment is 1101i’. find lust, and 800d; but I am carnal. The righteous are all of the same spirit. They condemn them- selves for their imperfections, and confess the justice and goodness of God's commandments. and acknow- ledEe that God gave His common’- ments in mercy, and for the benefit‘ of mankind. They love His com. mandments and endeavor to keep them, and to all such as thus con- duct themselves, the Lord accepts that they keep His commandments, because they do it in the spirit. He sets to their account that they love Him. David said: 0 how love I Thy lawi it is my meditation all the day; and all that David had in the Mosaic Law was but little in com- parison with the gospel we have. Thouthrough Thy commandments hast made me wiser than mine ene- mies, Ps. 111N137, 98. The saints under the Old Testament Dispensa- tion loved the instructions of God's word, and thus gave proof of their love to God, and Christ is God manifest in the flesh. The love of God and the love of Christ is the same divine changeable love. All who have the commandments of God, and keep them, love Jesus. The great duty entrusted to the church was to send the Gospel to all the world, that they might learn the way of life, know the Gospel, learn the commandments of Jesus Christ, and keep them, and thus show their love to Him. Unless peo- ple have the commandments, they cannot keep them, nor can they show their love to Jesus, but will central. The Father loved His Bon from all eternity and so has He loved the Church, the mygtlcal body of Christ, which Hc will take home to glory. God so loved the world, that is. sinners who were of the world, but were chosen of God out of the world us in Christ Jesus before the foun- dation oi’ the world, that is in eter- nity.-God's choice was gratuitous, it arose from His own love and good- ness and not from any merit in the fallen race of Adam to deserve mass of mankind was corrupt and sinful, hateful and hating God and one another Act 3 :3. That believers were chosen in Christ before the foundation of the world shows clear- ly that God's chosen people were in- cluded in the eternal counsels and remain in sin and ignorance, and perish; hence the paramount duty of sending the Gospel to all the world, that all people may learn the i way of salvation. | 2. The blessings of keeping God's Commandments. Those that love Christ are be-, beloved of the Father, who is the‘ originator and creator of all things,‘ and is therefore placed first. To be‘ beloved of God is most wonderful, and most blessed. He bestows the benefits of His love on His beloved ones. He makes all things work» to- gether for their good. He sees the, snares that satan is laying down for ‘ them, and frustrates his wicked pur_ pose, breaks his snares, and deliv- ers His beloved out of his meshes? The steps of the righteous are di- rected by the LorduHe is always mindful of His beloved, and watches over them; yea, has given Christ charge of them, appointed Him their shepherd. His eyes are always upon the faithful or the land; He that keeps Israel He slumbers not nor sleeps. Our Creator is God the Father, who is the Creator of all things. Creation is of the Father, Redemp- tion by the Son, and Sanctification by the Holy Spirit. The work of the three persons are in beautiful order. First Creation, which must neces- sarily take place first, second Re- demption, which must necessarily take place before sanctiflcation. But none of the three works men- tioned is subordinate. They are co- ordinate. God is represented in' three persons performing-the three great departments of Creation, Re- démption and Sanctiflcation. The three are one God the same in sub- ‘ stance, equal in power and glory. i We will here consider the creation 1 i of man, which is most importantJJewly-Christ was a Jew-received and persecullon of all His adversar- and sufferings sinners have beemthe Father and His Son‘ Jesus ies. He was without a permanent saved, reconciled to God, and pre-‘Chrlst. Theywlll come lmfl 11m home, and dependent upon ille pared for glory, Christ manifested and make their abode with him. He Man is fearfully and wonderfully purposes of God in eternity, and in connection with Christ, and beloved of God the Father as His own Son. The love of God exceeds all human understanding being infinite and eternal. The Church triumphant will be drinking forever out of the ful- ness of Divine love. That love is limitless and inexhaustible, full of peace and Joy, Joy unspeakable and full of glory. Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us, and sent His Son to be the propi- tiation for our sins. We had every, reason to love God; but he had no reason to love us. This is the won- derful love that He loved us who were His enemies, and altogether unloveable; and yet He loved us and sent His Son Jesus Christ to be a propitiation for our sills. God is love. None love God the Father, but those that love Christ. 2. Christ loves those that have and keep His Commandments. To those He has promised His love; and His promises never fail of accomplishment. Such as keep God's comma ldlnonts have the promise of the love of God the Father and the love of Jesus Christ. The Divine love is the same in both. The Father loved us so as to give His Son for us. When God gave His Son for us, He gave His greatest gift. Christ ls God's unspeakable gift; and was given for the salvation of sinners. Christ in His love came to this world to seek and to save that which was lost. He gave up for a time His beautiful zand glorious home in Heaven to save snncrs; and a shameful rcccptlon He re- ceived when He arrlved in the world. He was in the world, and the world was made by Him and the world knew Him not. He came, unto His own and His own, the‘ Him not. Jno. 1 : l0, ll. They fought a great battle, but Christ was victorious. Then we find Him in the temple purging it of those who made it a place of traf- flc. He drove them out of His Fath- er's house, and overthrew the money changers’ tables. He scourged thiev- es and robbers out of the temple. He was not supported in His work of Refomlation. The representatives of the Church, the Scribes a nd Phari- sees, were rather offended at His work. They asked His authomyqlhf what He did, and who gave Him the authority. They were evidently dis- pleased, but satisfied with condi- tions as they were. Their language implied that He had acted with too much boldness. They considered that they themselves were the Lords of the Temple. Their opposition to Christ continued to Him throughout His life and work; and finally brought about His crucifixion.
