Presented on glorious glossy pages, the photographs lend a special interest to the text, and selected works by numerous artists add appeal and teach by example. Subjects covered include drawing media, extensive painting media, colour and composition, subjects and themes, and the studio. The reference section at the end of the book is also useful, containing a glossary of terms, health and safety information and a directory of art-material suppliers. Demonstrations on important techniques such as applying a wash and stretching canvas prove useful and include well- detailed instructions, as well as step-by-step illustrations. The bulk of the book leans toward painting and the related subjects, and caters more to the painter than to some of the other mediums.
