Then, after another long scrutiny of my features, he asked: *‘What man?’’ “TIT don’t know; I never saw him be- fore. Higgins said he was a detective, but Iean't believe it. I could do nothing but come to you.”’ Henry, who had followed me into the room, heard me, but stood quietly in the background. When ~ had finished, Mr. Jones spoke very devidedly. : ‘This is a very.serious matter. S5ome one has evidently been tampering with the poor girl’s wits. ‘*Henry,’’ and Mr. Jones turned to his son, ‘‘just run round to Fenchurch's office and ask him if he can come round for five minutes.’’ But Henry evidently wished to have no more to do with the matter. incoherence took the He examined my to ascertain ‘*Send Bence,’’ he said, shortly. ‘‘I’ve got to drive young Bates to Richmond, and I aught to be with him by this time. One,a pair of light thin kid that he had worn that morning, he threw carelessly on the table. The other pair he proveeded to draw on his hands. I watched him, horror-struck. As he lrew on the second |] noticed that the ua end was torn off. With a cry, scarcely knowlog what I did, 1 snatched it from his hand, and produced the strip of dogskin I had been carrying. It fitred exactly into the torn place. CHAPTER XIII. Both father and son stodd for a mo- ment as if transfixed, the former, I think scarcely knowing what bad happenod until 1 explained where I had found the piece of glove. Father and son stood fac- ing each other silently, it seemed for quite a long time At last [ looked up, scarcely sable to repress my sobs. “Oh, Henry!’’ I whispered, could you?"’ Harry, whose face was 4 curious color, laughed hoarsely, “Well, you thought me capable of any villainy, and so I am, you see.’’ ‘But is was not you! You were not the man I saw!’’ I cried, in an eager whisper. No; but I know all about him,”’ said Henry, shortly. ‘‘l may as well make a clean breast of it now,’’ he continued, in & strange tune, looking at his father. ““And we needn't pretend it’s very Shocking in me, as it would be ina person who had borne a high character. Kverybody knows me ard my opinions!" “Oh, Henry! but i had always be- lieved in my heart that you were better than your opinions.’ I thought he seemed touched. ““Well, I've deceived you, Now, in- stead of wavering between trust and dis- trust you can have the satisfaction of knowing Lam an out-and-outer.” ‘The woman!’’ I cried. ‘‘Oh, Harry, then you knew who the woman was?’’ **Upon my honor—if you think I have ‘nough left to swear by—I never saw her before this morning.’’ , At that moment a clerk came in and announced ‘‘Mr. Fenchurch.”’ ‘“You’h keep my counsel—just for this morbing?’’ sald Henry, abruptly, leaning over and speaking in a low voice. ‘Of course she will,’”’ broke in Mr, Jones’ voice; ‘Winnie would never utter a word to get an old friend into trouble; isn't that true, Winnie?’’ **} hope so, Mr. Jones,’’ said I. The sound of his voice had startled me. I noticed also in the father’s face the effects of the son’s confession of guilt. I had never seen Mr. Jones lcok so pale and so disturbed. He, like me, had always, I knew, a secret belief in Henry. I crossed over to ‘his chair and whispered, with my hand affectionately on his shoulder, ‘‘Don’t be hard upon Harry, will you?’’ when Mr. Fenchurch walked slowly into the room. He nodded without smiling first to Mr. Jones, and then to Harry, and then without noticing me, sat down and be- gan torubd his guld eye-glasses. “You sent for me, Jones?’’ he said. **Yer,’’ anewered poor Mr. Jones. “I have had some very unsatisfactory news about our unfortunate ward, Miss Clarke. There is some sort of mystery about it, and I hoped that you might help us to clear it up.’’ Poor Mr. Jones! He may have hoped this when he sent for his co-guardian a few minutes before, but not now that he knew the culprit was his owr son. I felt so sorry for both him and Henry, that I kept my gaze out of the window. Mr. Fenchurch gave one shrewd glance at all of us. “‘Let’s hear it,’’ he said, briefly. “Tam afraid neither you nor I can entirely acquit ourselves of blame in this matter; for it seems that since she has been living down at the brewery, she has been quietly losing her wits. I have een so busy that i¢ would have been lifficult for me to keep trotting down from time to time to see her; but you, Fenchurch, might have given the girl a look in."’ “Not much use for me to go,’’ said Fenchurch, dryly. ‘‘Never knew Miss Clarke had any wits; shouldn’t have noticed the loss of them.’’ l in my seat at the window moved im- patiently. Mr. Fenchurch noticed this, aé he noticed everything; but he did not look up. “You mustn’t say that before Winnie Kent,"’ said Mr. Jones, ‘‘It is she who found out poor Alice's case, and 4t is from her that you must hear all abeut it. You know Winnie, I think?’ “‘Yes,’’ said Mr. Fenchurch, as he wheeled his chair around to face ma ‘‘Ia it you who are to tell the story? The law passed at the recent session ofthe Louisiana Legislature and ap- proved by Goy. Foster, prohibiting the wearing of hats in theaters and other places of amusement where an admis- sion is charged, went into effect last week, It isstated that the women of Louisiana have bowed gracefully to the decree that they must not obstruct the view of others in theaters by mil- linery monstrosities. When they enter places of public amusement now they quietly and unresistingly remove their hats and receive checks for them. The ladies are content and the men are delighted. ‘‘The simple fact is,” says the “Picayune,” ‘that the Louisiana women are remarkable for thety hoanty of face and for their sweet and obiiging disposition. The Anti-hat law permite them to display their handsome heads | uncovered, as well exhibit their good hearts. It has been always the custom for the ladies to attend the French opera in evening dress, with uncovered heads, and, therefore, the exactions of the law do not discomfort them in the least. Moreover, the Louisiana women are not bald, and they can afford to show their pretty heads. , as to Preventing Windows from Frosting. The time is approaching when thi owners of display store fronts will have the weather trouble from the frosting of their windows. This may be prevented by painting the glass Usual ¢ old with a solution of glycerine in 63 per cent spirit of wine. Glycerine, like chloride of lime, has the property of absorbing water, and this action over- comes the difficulty. For sma!! show windows sulphuric acid may be em- ployed, as isdone in Russia. This, however, is only efficacious where the windows are double. The cracks be- tween the two window frames and around the edges are kept tightly sealed and several small vessels half tilied with concentrated sulphuric acid are left in the space between the plates of gli But the simplest and best cure of all for frosting windows is to have a small electric fan playing near it continuously. The air is thus kept in motion, and there is no chance for the frost to settle on the glass. iss. Drunkards in Turkey. This reminds us that the Turks, who are mentioned @ccasionally in the newspapers, have a singular manner of regulating drunkenness. Thus does Pouque- instruct us. But suppose that the privileged drunkard is suffering from a still or anumb and cannot give his name, address or station? What then?
