The fa » 7 a yore l locality for staking claims the past week hw beea the ground lying betweea the Black Jack tunnel and the Beitish Columbia Com- pwmy's ground, which is to an extent prospect- wi. asthe rock can be seen at a distance: of forty fet below, and from it some rich samples were had recently trum the drive which that eompiny are making across their lode. The woe extent of ground between the two poiats pimed was stake off, ani the prognostica tims that the beuanza rans through The ground staked. The character of rock take from the British Columbia. shaft favor this theory. Another theory prevails, ani that is that the Bonanza end Steadman ledges converge at or near the British Colum bia shaft, and hence the richness of the ore at that point. The claims lying between the St. Liurent Company and Eaterprse are par ex- cellence the straight-ap Bonaiza claims and ave named as follows: St. Laurent, Cariboo, Anerican, Plakerton or Lowhee, and Enxter- prise. On Grouse Creck a numbor of claims hive also been taken up, and rock has been b> ought from that vicinity which is pronounced b; Mr. Inderstroth tobe rich. itisof the honey-comb variety and assays a3 high as s:venty-eight dollars from croppings. Between the Britis: Columbia shaft and Grouse Creek the Proserpife, Pluto, Diver and Dow Com panies are at work prospecting the lode. In. teresss of 100 feet in the three former are held ai hig’: as $1,290, and sales have been made at these rates. Proserpine and Perseverauce being the favorites, no interests are being oTared. Looking northweste:ly from the Ea- terprise ground we have the Duulevy locations. itis reported to-day that these claims, con- sisting of three lying side by side, being so located with aview to defeat the efforts of side-wipers, were sold to F. J. Barnard for thirty thousand dollars ; the intention being »t> forma company in Victoria t» work the claim. This ground is regardel as being the northerly extension of the Conanzy and sam- ples of the croppings justify the belief. A rospecting tunnel is being run to strike the eles at a distance of about fifty feet below the surtace, More northerly still are the locations of George Byrnes and Sam Walker and others. One singular fact demonstrated this week is that trem the high ground on the Dunlevy locotions looking southeaster- ly the apexes of the hills in which the Enter- rise, Cariboo aud British Columbia claims are loentall can be easily distinguished. Should these claims all contain Bonanza ore, and the chiracter of the quartz justifies the belief, it will prove to be tne longest stretch of paying quartz known in the mining world. In the exton between Richficid and Barkerv He a elaim has bsen located known a3 the Canon Co., Mr. Jame; Lindsay being the chief pro- moter. Thi: company have in sight a ctrc.nger of good looking ore and yesterday contracted for running a tunnel on the strings with a view of striking the ledge. Lf Bonanza ore is found in this claun it will crop out ggain in the Black Sack ground, On another tihe are located sev- ecal elaims, prominent among them 1s the Vi- vian, This company are at work in the old Jenkins diggins and it is reportel that they have the ledge. The locality is a promtsing are one and the forenin of the work soeaks nm th> mst enyvice tt rms o: the prospects. If assays of ore fvom the claim have been made the result has not so far been made public. The Steadman is again attracting attention through the efforts of ths Cariboo Quartz Mining Company, who a°a running a drive across the lode and are now taking out a class of ore declared by Mr. Inderatroth, the company’s amalgamator aad assayer, to be far better than that milled last fall from which the first bar was obtained. The Enterprise tunnel is in 100 feet and is pronounced an uncommonly good job. It is estimated the ledge will be strack at a further distance of 160 feet. The Perseverance Vom. pany have run a cut on the ledge and are taking out rock to be tested. The Vivian Company are cutting into the lode discovered in the Jenkins ground, a distance of 70 feet below the service, and are also running @ cut across croppings above ground. In fact. gene ral activity prevails. ‘Lhere are or need be no idle men, a3 all the companies are doing work of one kind or another of their locations. ay Suddenly, at Morell, of diptheratie sore / throat, on the 9th inst., Earnest J., aged 1 year and 7 months; also, on the 22nd, Annie €., aged 3 years and 7 months, children of James McTague.
