Research has shown thlstobean error, and that from th more pain than the decay of the teeth. Speculation as to tho. cause there had been in abundance, till by the aid of the microscope and his know- ledge of Bacteriology, Dr. Hilltr, now of Berlin, an American dentist showed tne‘ decay of the teeth to be due to the action of a germ as truly as in tuberculosis. Dr.; Hiller showed by experiment that when a piece of meat or other food stud' heeamef lodged between th\ teeth or in a crevice ini atootn, it very soon became infected by ‘ these germs. Hers they multiplied by 1 i the one alongside o t. Now kaowinglhe cause of the decay we are in a fair way to do something to com- bat the disease. Our first task will be to ~remove the cause, or in other words, keep `\the.teeth free from particles of food. In :many cases nature has done. much in ‘forming the teeth, so that they are self cleansing, they being perfectly formed yfood cannot g.t between them and their ,surfaces are smooth, so .that any particles ofsfood can readily bs removed from them by the action of the -lips and tongue. In other cases where nature has not been so kind wemust use artificial means to bring about the same state of affairs. This in a great measure ican be done by the use of ,the tooth brush, powders and antiseptic mouth wash and by passing silk floss be- tween the teei.h.- At times however decay will take place at some point from which the food could not be dislodged. If a careful watch is kept however and be- fore duaay has proceeded too far the tooth thoroughly polished at this point the pro- babilities are, the surface now being smooth no further lodgment will take place and the decay will be arrested. If the decay has proeeedei so far that it is thoroughly polished to give itasmooth Surface as if it is leit rough particles of 1 tooth brush and powders is apparent in impossible to remove it by polishing, every particle of decay must be removed i - and a filling inserted. The filling must be. From what has been said the -use of the keeping the teeth clean and polished and of antiseptic washes to prevent the for- mation of germs. Gnly a few seem to realise what the is more disgusting than a row of decayed teeth or more disiiuuring than the sunken cheeks resulting from their loss. The food cannot be properly masticated and lndigestion with all its distress and pain follows. The putrid matter from those which is not only very disguisting but very iniurlous to the health. Crown, bridges, plates, etc., have been a blessing to mankind and are very much better than broken down teeth or no teeth; but no artificial appliance will ever be able to sat‘sfactcrlly replace the teeth which nature gave us. When we con- sider how valuable our teeth are and the ingnry done to ourselves bv their decay, is , it not worth our whxlefto give~shem a few ` moments attention each day .2 E. E. Ronma. D. D. S.
