And it came to ,pass aiic-r this that ` David inquired of the Lord. saying, hall ,, I go up into any ol the cities of Judah? The title of our lesson is “David Be comes King,” and it would seem as if ,~ the fifth chapter should have been cho- `\ sen instead of this one, as there David is anointed king of all Israel, while in this lesson he is only anointed king of Judah; but as chapter v is suggested as n study in connection with this the fgrouud is thus covered. Some have wondered how David with such a ree }ord as he has in Scripture could ever be called “a man after God’s own heart” (I Sam. xiii, 14); Acts xiii, 22), but there are at least two rays ofllglit on this. One is that the evil in Da- vid’s life was the exception, not the rule, and the other is that it was in the matter of the kingdom and his re- liance upon and obedience to God that he was a man after God’s heart.. See how here and almost invariably he takes no step without inquiring of .tho Lord (I Sam. xxiii, 2, 4, 10-12; xxx, 8: II Sam. v, 19, 23). It would be well for us if we all lived according to Prov. ill, 5, 6. ,, 2, 3. So David went up thither, °'° ° and his men that were with him did David bring up, every man with his household, and they dwelt in the cities of Hebron. Not only-his own household, _but all his faithful followers and their house- . holds, sha_re`v.'itli» liim his rest and his kingdom; so sliziil it be whgn the Son of David (Matt. i, 1) shall ave como to His kingdom. All His faithful fol- lowers shall reign with Him-(Rev. lil; 21; v. 9, 10; xx, oi. Davids ooo were not always faithful to him (I Sam. xxx, 6), and who is there among the disciples of _Christ who can truly say, “Surely the Captain may depend on me?" No one who knows anything- of himself will ever talk of his faithful- ness, but will mtlier rejoice in I Cor. i, 9; x, 13; I Thess. v, 24. 4. And the men of Judah came, and there they anointed David king over the house of Judah. ` In chapter v, 3, welread that all the elders of Israel anointed him king over Israel. In I Sam. xvi, 13, Samuel anointed him -king in the midst of his , brethren, so that' he was three times anointed. For the full light -nponthis -we must walt till He of whom David wana type shall have cor`n`e .to His kingdom. _'While David was king at Hebron over Judah one of Saul’s sort was king of Israel and resisted him, but the house -of Saul waxed weaker and weaker, and David waxed Stroll- . get and stronger. So David went on and grew (great (going and growintl. and the Lord God ot Hosts- was with him” (verses 8-_10;‘ chapter v_, 3, 10).- Though our Lord in still rejected- and by the world disownedf He will surely come to His kingdom and His throne. for God has said, “I will overturn. overturn, overturn it, and it shall be no more until He come whose right it is, and I will give it Him” (Ezek. xxi. 27). He is now waiting on His Fa- ther’s throne (Rev. iii, 21; Ps. ex, 1), but He will as truly come to His own' throne as David did (Jer. iii, 17). 5, I. And now the Lord shew kindness. and truth unto you. and I will also re- quite you this kindness -because yo have done.thin,t_hin¢. ~ These are some -of the words of Da- vid concerning the men of ‘Jabesh y Gilead who kindly buried the bodies of- Saul and his sons (I Sam. xxxi, 11-18).- Our Lord has Himself assured us that not even a cup of water given _in His name shall lose its reward and that in - the time of ‘re`compenses,A the resurrep-' tion of the just, He will ,reward every, one' according to his work- (Mark 41; Luke xiv,.-14; Rev. xxii, 12). .Since .these men-are so kindly spoken of be- lcause of their kindness to these dead ‘bodies; rescuing them from further dis-1 ‘ honor, whatcha-ll be said of Joseph and Nicodemus, who rescued the body I of oui;,1Lord from af'_gr'ave with the wicked and, gavjé. it a` pl-ace of honor-, . able burial? 9.) _ , , , ` ' 7. Therefore 'now let ,your hands be l, strengthened, and be ye valiant. 5 ‘ Kings die, circumstances friends, health and wealth may all ` but 'One has said that (He wiH fail us nor forsake us, 'so that we ,always say, ffThou, 0 Lord, ` forever” (Heb. 111195:' 1. 11: `o¢,ver dies .somi- .~folloW1r_i3- loans -ers:-Jollul, 7, 9 41,4; I Cori xv, 58.
