Apparently he was a middle-aged gen- telemen with good private means, living alone, and dining every day at Biguon’s or the Cafe Anglais. Yet this individual was the means of bringing more scoundre!s of a certain class to justice than perhaps any other detective in the Freach capital. All the secret agentsof the Paris force have their speciai line of business—their special beat, so to speak, where they hunt up the particular game they are told to look after. This Englishman had in his day been a great gambler, and even long after he had given up the rongd et noir and baccarat, loved a little ecarte With not very little points, and could hardly exist without his rubber of whist every evening. His specialite with the police was to spot down men who cheated, or were proprietors of gambling hells. On one occasion, which must be remembered by many members of the Frerch Jockey Club, he was the means of having arrested a per- son who had been introduced into that club, and who played eertain tricks with money and with checks that threw discredit on all the members until the affair was cleared up. And yet this gentleman lived more than adozen years in Paris without anyone suspecting bis employment, and even after his death the truth ovly came out by aceident. Of men employed in the same manner as was this Englishman—each man having bis own beat in the hunting ground of crime—there are at least three er four dozen in Paris. As a matter of course, their lives would ndt be worth a week's purchase if the dangerous classes could identify them. Itis only by keeping their names and appearances strietly secret that they carry on their work, which they cer- tainly do in as efficient a manner as any public servants in the world. —The Nineteenth Century. ee Adulterated Teas. The United States government seem determined to prohibit the importation | of adulterated teas, as will be seen from the following circular issued by the Treasury Department at Washington to collectors of customs: ‘The depart- ment has been informed that attempts miy be made to violate the Act ‘to pre— vent the importation of adulterated and spurious teas,’ approved March 2nd, 1883, by means of importations from Canada. The attention of the eustoms officers upon the frontiers is, therefore, especially invited to the matter, and in Case of doubt they are instructed not to deliy cr teas imported into their dis- tricts until proper samples shall have been sent to the nearest United Siates Office; appointed under the provisions of the ssid Act, and his report thereon Bhall have been received. the circumstances Justify such action, 1} is d ing ten strokes less | increase the n.umber of | Or in case! ~~ TEHH DATEY such officer may be invited may be in- vited to come to the port of entry and aid the revenue ofiicer in such exami- vations,” ( i Great Fre.ich Remedy, LeDuc’s Periodical Pills.
