Joun LATHERN, the popular pastor of Prince Street Methodist Church, has been transferred to the Nova Scotia Conference, and will probably take charge of the Milten (Yarmouth) Methodist Church. Mr. F. For the six months ending April 30th last, 2,450 immigrants arrived at Halifax, against 1,512 in the same period last year. Of this number, 1,431 were booked for Ontario, but most of them went to the North West; 310 settled in Quebec ; 254 went to the States, and the others remained in the Lower Prov- inces, Tue Americans, who, as every free trader knows, were killed some years ago by their protective tariff, are sending locomotives to Switzerland ; and the Lendon Lngineer says : ** English people are wanting work, and yet, for some reason, or want of it, our locomotive builders allow a country nearly 3,000 miles further away from Switzerland than we are, to supply locomotives to that country.” We attended a rehearsal of Mr. John Ross’s singing class, in the Athenem, this afternoon. A number of clergymen, members of the Legis- lature, and members of the School Board, were resent. The class is composed of about three undred children, drawn from the different schools of the city. VALPARAISO, May 14. _ The Bolivians have retaken Atracama It is announced from Jujuy, a town of the Argen- tine Repuqlic, near the Bolivian frontier, that 15,000 Bolivians are marching to attack the Chilians, Lima, April 24. Peru has reduced the tariff on all bread stuffs and other articles formerly received from Cli 50 per cent. Large orders have been sent abroad for grain. The town of Moilendo was shelled by a Chilian covertee with considerable damage to the Custom Houses, factories, and railway, but no lives were lost. ‘The same vessel went to Pisagua, where their landing was opposed by troops, but the Chilians soon destroyed the town with their cannon, foreigners losing over a million dollars worth of property. The Chilians also seized an English ship with a cargo of oil. The same vessel went to Inquique and tired seven shots into the town, but with slight damage. The Chilians made ,he attempt to land, as the Peruvian forces were ready to meet them. The Peruvian fleet remains at Callo. There is considerable comment at its in-ac- tion. A boat from the American gunboat Pensa- cola, while bringing a family from the shore to that vessel, had its ensign carried away by a shot from the Chilian gun boat, which was shelling the town, ef Pisagua. Admiral Rogers signalled the Chilian fleet, and their Admiral immediately boarded the Pensacola and apologized. The war spirit in Peru is still rampant. Panama, May 8. A Bonaventura letter states that President Garces, of the Cauca, was declared a rebel by General Payan, who attacked Garces’ forces at Amaime, defeating them with a loss of some 300 men killed. The routed forces were pursued in Cali, where all were captured, in- cluding Garces’ staff and 400 men. General Payan is Chief of State of Cauca, and peace is reported restored. RUSSIA. Sr. PererspurG, May 15. Several conflagrations in Kast Russian towns is causing great distress. Seventy arrests in Orenburg on charges of incendiarism. Four male and six female prisoners are undergoing court martial at Kieff, including three noblemen, one Prussian subject and a daughter of a Privy Councillor. Among other arrests are a title lady and a leading Nihilists. The streets of Kieff, near the Court House, are to be closed during the trial. Another fire in Isbit on 13th; four of the poorer quarters destroyed, GREAT BRITAIN. Lonpon, May 15. A despatch from Cape Town, April 16th, via Maderia, states that the Lancers and Dragoons were expected to arrive at Kambula in a few days, and that an advance would probably occur soon after their arrival. A petty chief and 80 followers in Basato- land have surrendered. In the Commons, last night, O'Connor Dow introduced a bill to establish the University of Dublin with affiliated colleges, making pro- vision for fellowship, scholarships and exhibi- tions, ata cost of £1,500,000, to be defrayed from the Insh Church Fund; the Chancellor and Vice-Chaneellor of the University to be appointed by the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, and the members of the Senate to be ap- pointed by the Lord Lieutenant in the first instance, to be thereafter elected. Several Irish members and W. E. Foster and Fawcett supported the bill; Sir Stafford Northcote declined to express an opinion until the House had time to consider the bill.
