THE CADRE VO|.4, No.l3,' ionic? .1973. Campus Police should include women Why doesn‘t UPEI have wbmen campus police? This year campus police have been approached by females asking about wo- men's roles on the campus police force and were literally laughed at. Actually it isn't a funny ‘ matter, other campuses 3across Canada including the Maritimes have women in this position. Dal. for instance employs wo— men if only a few, who have the same powers as the men. This is not a matter of women's liberation but of equal rights on campus. women are capable of fill- ing this role in a compe- tent and mature manner which is more than you can say fOr some male cam~ pus police. ' I had the chance to speak with people on cam- pus including campus pol" ice membersA Security director, fEU members and our new Business Manager, Mr. Place. Reactions were varied but the over- all views seened favour- able. Some asked "Why" well why not? Mr. McLeod Director of Security stated."Men are trained but do not have some of women's technique in the field." » g It could prove embarass~ ing for a policeman and for-that matter the girls involved, if a disturbance started in the ladies wash— room and authority was need: ed. -People seem to think in terms of men causing all the hassles, but this is not always the case. Mr. McLeod mentioned that a lot of items are lost or taken at dances, particularly around crowded areas of the womens wash— rooms. Women campus police can be an asset to have on the force. A comment made by one member of our campus police staff was that he could not accept women as substitutes for men but as addition to the force he could accept them. If six males are working at a Pig'an'Whistle I two more pair of female eyes watching over certain areas would be a great help. Females have the capabil- ity of checking I.D.'s coll- ecting beer bottles and standing authoritatively at a door or window. Even Security police in Canada have hired women who work on the same shift basis as the men. we realize it would take some getting uses to, but give us a chance. As Mr. McLeod put it ” Student Union should have a valuable look at it and uniform.them.‘. — Kathy Roach
