The railways bring the teeming products of the inland ‘ regions' f to the great seaports. Ships carry these products to distant markets beyond the seas. A great railway,coiiibina_tlon is thus inevitably able to control the connecting lines df ocean transport. The only pos sible way to meet the Morgpn combine successfully was obviously with a like” combination of railway and ocean trans-_ port-. Only in this way could Canada bs saved from being at the mercy of the Morgan combine, and it is to be observed that no other Canadian railway corpora tion than the C. P. R. was in a position to take up the controversy. I, It may be said that the interests of the people and those of powerful transporta- tion companies are seldom identical. It is to be regretted that so many of the great branches oi human activity are monopolie- ed by combinations of A few large capital- ists. We cannot, however prevent this, although it may be regulated in _tlie‘pnblic. interest. It is obviously* better to have `the‘ British Canadian 'ecommerce on .the Atlantic conf-rolledrby a Canadian railway company than by the Morgm combine. In the Inst analysis the Canadian`.Govern- ment and Parliament have paramount control of the Canadian corporation but the Morgan combine ls utterly beyond `l control of either the Yrltish or Canadian authorities. We may pause to enquire what would be the result were the Morgan shipping combine to obtain and keep con- trol or the can-ying trade or me ‘Atlantis In" the end it must be that the great volume of import and W 'export trade ,tor the __ continent .mis be aimie~_”~ . r f _,, fl.
