The quality of the crop was exception.- elly high. There ta no doubt that aha quant- lty of marketable potatoes in the hands of growers at. the completion of harvesting wee very much high- er than in the years of average pro- duction Great difficulty was exper- ienced tn satisfactorily housing potatoes and if it were not for the foot that the Fall was extremely favourable for both harvesting and temporary storage. great. losses would have occurred from frost damage. 3 A further saving factor in the situation was tiho large quantity of potatoes exported from the Provq inoe during the Fail months. At the end of tihe year some 700 car loads of potatoes up and above the quantity shipped in the same per- iod last year were exported. The whole question of potato production should be very wisely considered. A disturbing factor in marketing has developed due to the t ,. on the part of T013. This practise Ls f a t a1 to tihe position of sane ban-a ltd-e producers who are carry- lng a normal acreage, but who wish to dispose cf n portion iii their crop early to clear exnensv. There was little justification in the year 1946 for a. general over-all in- crease in acreage of potatoes in view of the fact that it was one cf the food products the production which was discouraged rather iiian encouraged at the CanadH-uh Ag-ri- cultural Conference, and by Feder- al and Provincial leaders across Canada. Provincial Laboratory The Provincial Laboratory has been e centre of industry durfnz the year. A large amount of work hes been done in diagnosing poet mortem examinations on various classes of livestock but more par- ticularlv within tihe poultry ar-zl fox breeding industries. The service that the laboratory has rendered has been of a. very outstanding character and its in- fluence is under constant growth. Under conditions of inadequate, general veterinary t-crvlce the Pro- vihcinl Laboratory has rendered an outstanding contribution in needy cases. During the present year testing of approximately 50.000 blood sam- ples taken from poultry flocks in tho Province has been successfully conducted while upwards of 25.000 foxes have been inuociilated as a preventative measure against dis- eases. The detail necessary to a euooelafui examination and disg- nosis is of a most comprehensive character and the accurate services performed in this respect under the guidance of Dr. George Bishop has be; d a inost veluobie nature. I Sheep and lambs The Sheep industry continues! to remain about stationery in‘ numbers although distinct im- v-ovements have been made inl quality and methods of market-l ing. Mnrkct levels on pelts have sagged and costs stiii con- tinue to increase. This is u most discouraging outlook for our breeders. However. such situa- tions occur in rill industries and no doubt the svticcl will slowly re- vnivo to bring the industry out or its present situation to one of briithter prospects. Conferences and Organization A great many important confer- cnccs took place within the Pro- vince among nrovinrilil groups and Wllll rcnrcscntativcs from various parts ni’ Canada. Newfoundland and tho Old Country. Ono of the itiost imnorlnnt of thcsc was the special mccting of the Canadian Federation of Agriculture held in Charlottetown in Septr-mhpr, Rap- rcsentutivcs from ail provinces in Canada were in attendance and received first hand impressions of some of our disabliitics as well as some of the natural assets which wi- have in the Province. We cannot possibly estimate the ereat value of this conference. Maritime conferences between Provincial Ministers and officials were also conducted and problems oi’ mutual interest rcccivcd care- ful study.
