A. F. Station Overseas. By Louis V. llunter Canadian Press Staff Writer A ROYAL AIR FORCE STATION SOMEWHERE IN ENGLAND. Feb. 1l--(CP)- Ground crews are the forgotten men oi the air force. The men “behind the lines" in Britain's sir war, they play a sil~ ent, unspeetacular role in keeping the big bombers in the air. Then- work never brings them into the headlines but they are "tops" with the men who fly the machines and there is a. kind of mutual admira- tion between them. A bomber is as sood as its ground crew. Fliers can't feel safc in the air unless they have confidence in t-he men who service their machines on the ground. ‘first is why. in the opinion of officers of a Royal Ca- nadian Alr Force Wellington squad- ron stationed here, "it is imperative to have very good ground crews- and we have." It requires more men to keep a bomber in the air than it does to fly one. Each aircraft has its own N$llllf ground staff of rlggerg and titers. while wireless mechanics, electricians and armorers look sf- ter. say. three or four machines. Omund crews with this squadron are from all parts of Canada. Thcv left all walks of life to loin the Air Pores and come to Britain.
