Siz,—A few days ago the Superintend- ent of Education avnounced that he would deliver a lecture in the Court House at Abram’s Village; and, notwithstanding that the inclemency of the weather prevented Superintendent arrived on Tuesday evening the 19th inst., he found the house well filled with eager listeners, all waiting to avail themselves of the benefits of such a highly them on the all important subject of Edu- cation—it being athing with which he was so clesely connected—and then proceeded to take up the subject, which he diecoursed in such an eloquent and intelligible manner that all, without exception, returned to their homes, fully satisfied that they had listened to the best lecture on the subject ever delivered in their presence. The dis- course was particularly directed to eduen- Schools, and the lecturer exemplified many of his remarks with such humorous and appropriate anecdotes, that the audience were not only instructed to the highest degree, but amused to the utmost. In the course of his remarks, the Superintendent also took occasion to impress on the people of Abram’s VI] ye, the netessity of having a graded school im the district; and con- cluded by saying that, if they wished ‘the rising generation to take their stand on the stage of life, they would haye to'take every means iui’ their power to give them a good education. Complimentary remarks were then made by several of the gentlemen present, all of whom expressed a very high opinion of the lecture, and promised that immediate steps would be taken to have the school graded. A vote of thanks was then tendered to the learned lecturer; after which the people betook themselves to their homes, and re- signed themselves to the care of Morpheus, overjoyed with ‘their evening’s enjoyment, and” heartily agreeing with the *‘compli- menter” who said, “it is a credit to the people of P. E. Island to have such an ex- cellent and competent man as Mr. Mont- gomery at the head of Education.” One Wuo Was Present. Abram’s Village, Sept. 22nd, 1882. More intelligence of animals rubbish ! This time it is a literary cat! This re- warkable creature is the property of a literary lady, recident in the city of Bath. Latterly the cat has betrayed the most in- tense interest in the art of penmanship, as practised by his mistress. ‘‘He would sometimes jump up beside her, and lay its paws upon her wrist. On one occasion, however, he leapt on the table in front of her, and watched her narrowly, and with such a preternaturally knowing glance in his bright eye, with his head held slightly on one side, that she was impelled to lay down her pen, and look aihim. What was her surprise and delight to see him walk deliberately to the inkstand, take a pen in his mouth, and, leaping to the floor, com- mence tracimg characters with it on the carpet, fortunately for which poor Timothy had forgotten the ink. Another day his mistrese said to him in fan, ‘‘Oh Timothy, The animal looked at in a few minutes with the missing button in his mouth.” The shocking destruction of a school house, together with all its inmates, includ- ing both grown persons and children, is re- ported foom the town of Grodno, the capi- tal of one of the governmental departmen's of Russia.
