The English mail rests in Pictou. ZION Tue entertainment given by St. Joseph’s Temperance Society, inSt. Patrick’s Hall,on Friday evening, was well attended, and passed off very successfully. A Wrir has been issued for the election of a representative to fill the vacancy in the First Electoral District of King’s County. The nomination is to take place on Thurs- day, the 17th, and the election on Thurs- day, the 24th inst. Vicx’s Intusrratep CaTALOGUE AND Firorat Guripe has been received. Mr. Vick says of it :—‘‘I think it is a pretty good thing of the kind—as good as anything in the world. If I didnot believe so, | should consider I had made a failure.” Mr. Vick is celebrated as a seedsman. A Society, having for its name the ‘‘St. Eugene Temperance Society of Covehead Road,” and under the auspices of the ‘‘ Ca- tholic T. A. U., of Prince Edward Island,” was organized on the 2nd imnst., with the following office bearers :—Rev. Thomas Phelan, Spiritual Director; Edward Mullen, Esq., President ; John Carrol, Vice Presi- dent ; Timothy Read, Secretary ; and Thos. Power, Treasurer. Fatturz. — The liabilities of Edward Albro & Co., who failed in Halifax recently, are about $160,000. The assets are put down at $100,000, but this includes $15,- 000 on mortgaged real estate which, if bronght into the market in the present state of business, would probably realize nothing abova the mortgages. It is said that the firm will offer 50 cents on the dollar, payable in 6, 12, 18 and 24 months. Two wife murderers were hanged on Saturday, one at Baltimore and the other at Canton, N. Y. The former clubbed his wife to death in order that he might marry her sister; the latter,a man named Van Dye, who gave his birthplace as St. Cath- arines, Ont., murdered a girl to whom he had been married a week. The last words of the Baltimore convict were, ‘‘Fam going home to glory,” while the St. Catharine’s man said, ‘“‘I amsure of glory.” Both men were entirely sober when they com- mitted the crimes for which they suffered. A Tramp broke open the store of the Hon. G. Moffatt, at Petite, Rocher, N. B., on Christmas night, and damaged every drawer, getting nothing, however. He then visited the stable of Simeon McGregor and stole a horse, harness and buffalo robe. He next visited Thompson’s and stole a sleigh, in which he came to Woodside’s. After dark, while the inmates of the house were sleeping, he broke open a drawer in Wood- side's bed-room and got $200. Leaving be- hind him horse, sleigh and all, he went to Bathurst. Returning by Petite Rocher station on the accommodation train, he was recognized, but he jumped from the train while in motion and escaped. The Kingston “‘ Daily News” gives the Premier this rather unpleasant reminder :— ‘« One of those monuments of Mr. McKen- zie’s remarkable foresight in the shape of steel rails continues to adorn the Peniten- tiary wharf. The rust on the rails is be- coming tolerably thick. In other parts of the country similar monuments may be seen. Why not keep them on the move from one point to another? an act which might put money in the pockets of a few staunch supporters. Or a large number of men might find employment in scraping the rust off them and then oiling them, But the approaching snow will shortly bury Re eee qr re uittest by Telegra% h. All the Austrian subjects in Roumania liable to military service are ordered home Four Russian battalions of infantry and a regimentof cavalry occupied Osar near the road to Trebison. Every preparation is being made for a long siege. The Khedive of Egypt has presented Stanley with the decoration of Grand Officer Midedie. _ From reliable information received at St. Petersburg, the Chinese have massacred fifteen thousand men, women and children at Kashyuarcau, a town of Muras, after conunitting horrible and frightful atrocities. Forty thousand Turks have retired into Roumania. The remainder of the seventy thousand are north of the Balkans. Miscellaneous News. A Berlin special to the ‘‘Times” says that tussia has been sounding the various Medi- terranean States as to their disposition rela- tive to the opening of the Dardanelles Straits. , The ‘‘Times’” Vienna despatch says: ‘‘It is stated from several sides that England, al- though declining to mediate, has confiden- tially sounded Russia as to the terms on which she would be inclined to make peace, and that the Russian Cabinet has been far less reserved than might have been antici- pated.” DEsERTER FROM Batt.—The case of H. H. Walsh, charged with passing a photographed bill on James McAllan, came before the Sti- pendiary Magistrate’s court this morning. When the charge was laid against Walsh a short time ago, there was no good evidence, and he was admitted to bail on giving two good sureties for $200 each. The bailsmen are John Kelly, tavern keeper, and W. B. Riggs, tailor. Since he was admitted to bail the police found in a room on his premises the instruments, chemicals and paper necessary for photograph- ing these Lills. This is strong evidence that the bills were photographed ‘by Walsh. On Wednesday evening he left this city for parts unknown, and the bailsmen appeared this morning to answer procedence on the bail bond. No procedence was taken, and the case was »ostponed in order to give a chance to the Calinined to produce the body of Walsh. Tue New York Tribune (25th inst) says that Sir Hugh Allan, a‘ter spending three weeks there looking for suitable terminal facilities for his line of ocean steamers, con- cluded that what he wanted was not to be obtained at that port, and began to look in other directions. He could not obtain a pier on the North river unless he went above Twenty-third street, and merchants would object to hauling their goods so far up town. He was offered a pier on the East river, but he found that was also in convenient. Baltimore, Philadelphia, and Boston offered him wharfage free, and would charge him nothing for harbor dues. These items, he says, he found very large in New York ; for instance, $39,000 a year for the use of a pier, and the extra expense for building sheds for the protection of freight and appliances for handling it would be a still greater tax, which would not be inconsiderable. When Sir Hugh was last in New York he said he had about decided to accept the offer from Philadelphia, from which port some of his vessels have already sailed. Our contemporary makes strong complaint of the extortionate charges which thus drive trade away to rival ports. Harvie’s Alan 1878 PRICE [2 CTS.
