The death is ‘announced of Dr. D.
C. Allan of Amherst N. S. Dr, Allan
wana New Brunswicker by birth, and
api dly attained popularity in his
rcliosen profession. He was not yet
47 years of age at the time of his
death. He was a Liberal in politics
and was one of the delegates from his
elected mayor of Amherst the same
year.
The Senators take things leisurely.
They have adjourned their House
from 28th April to ll-lay 17th and
thus take three weeks holidays in the
`midst of the session. _In the six
weeks passed since Parliament opened
the Senate has sat at the most but a
few hours during any one d9~Y and
lmost frequently but _ a few

circular letter received by Mr. George

Newson, R. B Norton and perhaps
others, extending a cordial invitation
~ to attend the International Commer-
cial Congress and National Exposition
of 2 American Manufacturers to be
held at Philadelphia next autumn.The
Congress will be composed of delegates
ciiicially appointed by the various
governments, and of duly accredited
delegates from Chambers of Commerce
in all parts of the world. Invitations
have been sent to 115 different coun-
tries and to over 1,000 commercial
bodies. The delegates will be the
guests of the city of Philadelphia
during their stay. The Congress will
be opened by President McKinley on
October lOth and will remain in daily
‘session for two weeks,or more. '

CHEESE.-The cheese market here
is without any change, and the business
doing is hardly worth talking about. In
the Brockville district there has been
a little trading, as noticed elsewhere.
The shipments of cheese last weak
were 3,558 boxes, against nil last,wliile
the total since navigation closed is 519.
729. against 441,866 boxes. Butter
shipments last week were 2,619 pack-
ages. and the total 72.976 pachages
against 39.841 packsucs ci year ago.
BUTTER-is ju.-;;.   ' at the
recent decline, sales ot iinest creamery
being made on the basis of 16§c to 17c.
Dairy is purely nominal.
EGGS--are not in very active demand
being quoted at 12lc to 18c per dozen.
Boom in Molasses.

The strong feeling which developed
in the market for molasses, a few davsl
ago, continues, and private cable- ad-
vises received from Barbadoes today
note a sharp advance cf lic. per gal on.
the first cost now being 13§c, which
figure means 3lc laid down here, and
even at the above price there is very
little offering. The demand here is
gyod, and there are buyers at the ad-
vance. There is also a good demand
for old Barbadoes stock. and it is re-
ported that all the round lots obtainable
in Quebec have been brought up bv
localwholesale grocers. On spot sales
of round lots ot Porto Rico have * been
made at 29§c, and Barbadoes at 305 to
81c. Cable advices from Antigua state
that the market is now bare of supplies.
