The past century has been pre-eminently we are entering will be more emphat- ically so. A few of our wealthier citizens works of eminent writers of the day. But this privilege is denied to the many and a Public Libary alone can supply it. \Vc have spent public money witha liberal hand for the education of our youth, but we have apparently forgotten that the teaching of the schools is but preparatory to that education which ought to go on through life and is to be acquired from books. We need a Public Libary to supply to adult citizens this great means of intellectual advancement and expansion; we need it to give our citizens the better privileges enjoyed in other cities; we need it to take away our reproach as a city without books. Space will ot permit that we shall enlarge upon this fruitful and urgent topic, but most nenrnestly do we urge both women and men to attend the meeting, called by His TVorship the Mayor, to be held to-night in promotion of the Library movement.
