PREACHER’S SURPLICE CAUGI-1T~FIRE.- While preaching in the Pro-Cathedral yesterday morning at the eleven o’clock mass, the Rev. Father Mciiluaid had a narrow escape the large candelabrum that is placed about the centre of t.he,.sanctuary rail, and, unnoticed, approached too close the lighted candles. The sleeve of his surplice caught aflre and one side of Father M`cQua.ld’s garment was soon in a blaze, without his hav- ing the slightest inkling of it, until when Bishop O"Leai°y and the other clergy present rose from their seats in the sanctuary with startled excla- mstione and ran to his assistance. At the same time the attention of the foremost of the congregation was attracted and from one aflrighted lady there came an involuntary scream. Father Mcquaid acted per- haps theleast. concerned of all. The moment he became aware ofhis dan- with his hands and succeeded in ex- tinguishing them before even the nearby clergy could reach his side. Except, for a slight burn or two, Father McQuald fortunately escaped injury. The incident caused an inter- ruption of several minutes in the ser- vice.
