A player may jump to two notrump over partners suit- bid 0! one, and that is a strong bid; or he may Jump from one diamond to two nearta or two spades. and that is much stronger. The whole question resolves itaeif down to this: is a certain bio des- criptive. not only or the bldder's PH” own holding, but at the combined KING OF THE ROYAL MOUNTED i see of Peter in the dark. Little Mrs. Peter Callie to the edge of the Dear Old Briar-patch and watched that bob- bing little white spot growing smaller and smaller until it finally disappeared. It was all she could ed softly. "I knew it." she said. "i knew he'd go just as soon as my back was turned. I suppose he just had to. but I don't see why. i- guess he's just made that way." Peter made straight tor the cor- ncr 01 Farmer Brown's garden where Farmer Brownts Boy had started digging it compost pit. It was into this that Old Mr. Toad had fallen, and Peter knew Raddy Fox hadn't seen Old Mr. Toad in there. "He couldn't. have looked very closely." thought Peter. "Perhaps he ciidii't expect to find anybody in there, and so he didn't see Old Mr. Toad squatting as not as he could. I've noticed that often folks don't see things they don't expect to see." A few minutes later Peter was at the edge of the big hole in Far- mer Brownts garden. He peered over the edge, taking care not to tumble in. He has very good eyes for seeing in the dusk. and it was quite dusky down in that pit. He looked and looked. "He isn't here," muttered Peter. "No, sir. he isn't here. That means that somebody must have caught him and taken him out. I won- der who did lt." He looked and looked again. but there as no sign of Old Mr. Toad. The pit was em- pty. Yes, sir. it was empty. Any- way. that is what Peter thought. and most people looking in there would have thought the same thing. But Old Mr. Toad was there. where was he? Why couldnlt Pet- cr see him? That was old Mr. Toads secret. : iii he was keeping it to hlmseli. Of course. a secret never is a secret if it isn't kept. Oid'Mr, Toad had buried nimselt in the sand at the bottom oi that trick of his. He had buried himselt before Reddy Fox looked in. and he was still buried when Peter pecped over the edge. - FIXED BOUNDARIES The Ashburton Treaty of 1842 settled the boundary between Can- ada and the State of Maine. and around the Lake of the Woods. resources. based on what. the bid- der may have heard previously from his partner? Let's look at a. hand which rais- ed a typical argument: - South dealer. 1 Neither side vulncrabia. , . The bidding: South West North East 1 Q Pass I Q Pug 2 0 Pass 3 N '1' Pan Pass Pass It was no great victory for North to make 11 tricks at-nottump, con- sidering that the hand would have produced 12 easy trickslut dia- monds. North. implying that the blame for missing the slain was South's. pointed to his own "big bid" at three notrump over South: two diamonds. South, however. countered neatly by asking what he could have bid. justitiably. over North's three no- trump. North had no suggestions on that matter. The tact is, or course. that North's leap to three notrump, though strong, was not nearly strong en- ough. North's holding was better than it minimum one-notrump opening bid. and with South act- ually opening the bidding and sltowing a second suit in which North had such strong support, the slain possibilities should have been super-evident. Thus. it. was entirely in order for North to bid iour notrump over two diamonds tnlackwoodi. or. dispensing with that formality. to jump straight to six diamonds. greafie f7eejz XVI TH K E I.
