Stains on painted wood caused by spatters of mortar or lime may be re- moved by rubbing with lemon juice ; the paint will resume its original color and a little furniture oil well rubbed in will restore the luster. An easy way to remove all stains from table linen is by rinsing the stains in clear, cold rain water, then washing immediately in boiling water in the washing ma- chine. When warmed water is used for washing by machine or by hand, the linen may be placed in the boiler and covered with coid rain water, then allowed to boil afew minutes. Every stain will disappear, and it is ready for the wash. For washing windows I have found nothing easier or better Royalty at Work. | | than ammonia. It is' weakened with rain water as little as it is possible aan it, rubbed over the glass with a soft cloth dried and in a few minutes polish- ed. This leaves the glass beautifully clear. Turpentine is invaluable in cleaning wood and gilt frames. Apply with cloth or brush and dry with soft cloth. A bottle of hard or finishing oil should be kept in every home. Its application where needed on furniture or frames saves much of the extra hard work at house cleaning.-- Housekeeper. ~~ mer Hints to Housekeepers. To keep hair brushes in good con- dition proceed in the following man- ner: Have two dishes which contain, say, a quart of water, adda dessert spoonful of ammonia. Now take the brushes, one by one, and keep dippixg the bristles up and down in the water (being careful not to wet the backs,) and in a minute or two the dirt and dust willcome out as if by magic. Now dip up and down several times in the second dish containing the clean water to rinse them, snake well, and place to drain across a rack or towel horse. No soap is needed and no rubbing with the hands. A good way to clean silk consists in sponging it with equal parts of black tea and vinegar. Shake the silk until it is nearly dry, whereupon press it with an iron that is half hot. A very good way to test whether sheets are damp or not is to place an ordinary tumbler between the sheets for a little while, and it the bed is damp traces of moisture will a; pear on the inside of the glass. Spots and marks on woollen gowns are easily removed by rubbing them well with a cake of magnesia. Hang the gown away fora day or two and then brush thoroughly.
