The Manhattan for March is beauti- ful in its art and varied and entertaining in its literature. The frontispiece is a masterly engraving of one of the finest pictures of the Spanish painter,Fortuny, whose sparkle anddash the engraver, Frank Freach, bas reproduced with re- markable fidelity. The leading article on “Dartmouth College,” the Alma Mater of Webster and Choate, by B. B. Vallentine, is interesting and profusly illustrated with excellent cuts. Another well illustrated paper is “Rafting on the Alleghany,” ,»’ a breezy and vivid descrip- tion of that peculiar industry so little keowa to those not engaged in it, by William Willard Howard. This article and the accompanying drawings are the result of aspecial expedition made for the magazines by the writer and artist last summer. An amusing paper by Cope Whitehouse, whose researches in Egypt have given him so much reptta- tion in Europe, dispose of “The Myth ot Fingal’s Cave,” of which the picture is Manhattan for in most school geographies. Mr. Whitehouse, with the aid of some engravings, demonstrates that there is no fingal and no Cave. At this moment when Egyptian affairs are attracting so much attention, timely isa paper by Pasha Loring, entitled “What will come of Egypt?’ Gen. Lering’s ser- vices under the Khedive Ismail for ten years make him one of the first of living authorities on Egyptian matters. A pleasant natural history paper, after the manner of White of Selborne, is “A Walk ia Winter,” by Chas. C. Abbott. Mrs. Spofford’s vigorous story. “Trans- formation,” is eoneluded, and Edgar Faweett’s “Tinkling Cymbals, ” which is becoming of absorbing interest, is continued; and thereis a bright and well- told short story, “What Came of a Kit of Mackerel.” The poets of the number Sarah Orne Jewett,'ia “A Farmer's are Sorrow ;” James B. Kenyon, with a rich- ly colored word- -pieture “In Aready ;” Ex-Surrogate Gideon J. Tucker with a ballad on “The Capture of New Amster- dum,’’ after the manner of Macaulay and others. Recent Literature, Town Talk and Saimagundi are agreeably | filled . The April Manhattan will have for its leading article a paper on Edwin Booth by Henry C. Pedder, with en- gravings in the best style of art, de- picting the famous actor in severa] of his leading parts. It will contain aiso a paper by Matthew Arnold oa “Litera- ture and Scienee.” a profusely illustrat- ed article on Rothernburg,”* a quaint o'd German city, little known to travel- er's ; @ paper on Jasper Francis Cropsey. N.A., illustrated with portrait and drawings, one of them by the Crown Princess of Germany. To these will beadded an illustrated paper on Zwingli, the Swiss Reformer, and an article by E. ¥. Smalley on ‘Some Tendencies of Modern Journalism.” Julian Haw- thorn will have ashort story entitled “An Autograpbical Romance,” «pd “Tinklieg Cymbals” will be continued. ><> The Domestic Monthly for March 1884.
