April 11, 1956 Follow These Basic Rules For Your Floor Finishing 0 There are three basic rules furl floor finishing, whatever the mat- erial used. paint experts say: The floor must be clean. Best cleansing is obtained with alkaline clf'al'lel'S, solvents and hot. water; The floor must be properly prim- Qd. 9 only those materials especiall, prepared for floor finishing may he used. VARNISHING In uunlshing new wood floors. the wood must be sanded with a power sander. then thoroughly dusted. Open grained woods. part- icularly oak. must then be filled with a paste wood filler that has) hcen rcrluceii to paint consistency according to the manufacturer's directions. Filler should be applied length- wise with the grain with a three or four-inch brush, covering about a two-foot wide strip. it should be worked for about 10 minutes, or un- til a whitish cast has developed. indicating satisfactory drying- Excess filler should then be rub- bed off. across the grain. with but- lap or excelsior, leaving filler in wood pores only. The entire floor l floor varnish thinned as recom- mended by the manufacturer. The primer coat should dry over- night also. then the floor should be sanded with sandpaper and dusted. The first of two top coats of un- thinned floor varnish should dry for 24 hours. then be sanded and dust- ed. -The second coat finishes the ob. J Badly worn coats of varnish should be sanded to the bare wood. than refinished as are new floors. REMOVE!!! . Paint and varnish removers may be used advantageously if the sur- face is in good condition and does not require sanding. old varnished floors in good con- dition require no preparation other than a thorough cleaning with hot soap and water, or paint thinners, to remove all traces of dirt. grease. or wax. Worn places should be spot primed before finishing the floor. Painting floors requires similar attention. New wood floors need only be dry. smooth. and clean heforc paint 4 floors in poor condition must be sanded to the bare wood should be treated in this manner. and. after sweeping off all filler particles. allowed to dry overnight.
