F eived at Ottawa until Noon. on Friday? the 2nd August 1918 for the convey-1 times per week over rural mail route' An ofiicial statement will be. issued in the course of a few days by the Militia Department eiplaining that it is not 8ie intention of the government to call out the nineteen year old boys or to cancel exemptions of other clas- ses. This action is designed to calm the agitated farmers, who seem to be under the impression that other clas- ses are to be called out at once. At present the government is securing sufficient reinforcements to keep the Canadian army at strength, and it is very unlikely that it will be necessary 'to call out any other classes or to cancel any more exemptions until af- ter the harvest. If, however, the war situation becomes so critical that more men are needed at once the gov- ernment will be compelled to take drastic action. But this is not ex- pected. O, O U Preparations are well under way for the flotation of Canada's next Victory Loan in October, which will probably be the greatest 'financial ei- fort the Dominion has yet made. The amount of the Loan has not been de- finitely fixed, but the impression is that the sum to be asked for in the, prospectus will be $250,000,000, with 11 real objective of $500,000,000; There is no doubt as to Canads.'s ability to raise this large amount, even after, four years of war. The money is needed to meet the growing military expenditure and to provide Canadian credits from which Great Britain may purchase our production of munitions, aeroplanes, grains, ineats. cheese and other foodstuffs and supplies. This, it should be made known, is the only means by which Canada's'~ productsi may be secured. ' . . I The Bible Students Association here is apparently in wrong with the auth- orities. Yesterday something like 1,- 000 copies of “The Morning Messeng- er" and “The Watchman" two of Pas- tor Russeil's publications which are banned in Canada, were seized by the police, and the secretary of tho Asso- ciation, 11. young man named Rogers. was placed under arrest Some of this literature was found at Rogers home and the balance at the headquarters of the Association on Bank street. This is the second time within a few months that banned literature has beenseized at the Bible Students’ headqquarters here. The first seizure was made in March, when over 2,000 copies of "The Watchman" and "The Bible Students’ Monthly" were confis- cated. n n The announcement .is made that Judge Maclennan. of the Supremo Court of Montreal, has been appoint- ed a Commissioner to invcstigalo the charges of irregularities in the allot- ment of the military vote in tho con- stituency of Clianibly-Vcrclierei-1.
