yr oe DOLCE GDS ee ae ~~ ee Passing the Teutonic (Guard. [Boa Perley Poore. | One of the moat eflicient divisions in the Army of the Potomac, as organiz ed by Gen. MeClellan in the full of 1861, was that commanded by Blenker, whocame at the herd of the First German rifles of New York, about 800 strong, snd became the commander ot some 12,000 men, nearly all of them Germans. Like the children of the captive Jews, who spoke ‘half in Heb- rew and half in the speech of Ashdod,” these Tentonic warriors had a vague idea of the English language, and their style of “challenging” was uique. AsI was going the grand rounds with a lady and gentleman from Boston, we “passed” through all the pickets on the Leesburg turnpike on the presentation of a tree season ticket on a railroad route, which was first shown by accident instead of the legiti- mate pass from headquarters, and after- wards to test the knowledge of the sen- tries. “Yah! dat ish goot—forvart!” was the approving verdict after each ostensible careful examination of the card. ap Sea Crabs Three Feet Across. [Scientific Journal. ] Professor Verrill, of the United Siates fish commissiou, reports that the zoological results of the deep sea explorations last year, were of great interest. Many additions tothe fauna oi great debths were made, and a large proportion of them are undescribed forms. Some of the fishes were of great interest. Huge spiny spinder- crabs over three feet across were taken in 1,000 to 1,230 fathoms, and another very large crab occurred in great abundance in 500 to 1,000 fathoms, while in 2,574 fathoms a large and strovg crab-like creature was taken. Many curious shrimp, some of them of large size afd brighily colored, and often with perfect eyes, occurred in most of the deepest dredgings. Several very interesting new forms of star tishes, ophiurans and holothurians were dredyzed, some of them in large quanti- tres, even in the deepest localities. Several interesting new forms of corals, gorgonians, sea-pens, and allied forms aise oct urred. ed Alpino Indians. | Arkansaw Traveler. ] Several cases of natives of India, hav- ing a white skin, are reported. Mr. A. 'T. Fraser mentions the finding of a family in which several white persons, resembling Europeans, iad appeared, the parents having the ordinary black- ness of the natives. The whiteness was not the result of leprosy. the albinos is much more sensative to the sun’s rays, than that of other natives oreven Of Europeans. The contrast between white and dark relatives having a striking resemblance of feature is said to be most remarkable. Our reporter adds, however, that some of it is due to an affection, known as ‘missionery bleach” among a few tribes. _-_-* Wife of the Nihilist Prince. [Chicago Tribune. ] One ofthe pleasant things in connec- tion with the imprisonment of danger- ous characters in Claervaux by the French government is the faithfulness ofthe wite of the Nihilist, Prince Krapotkine. She has visited his prison daily throughout his long imprison- ment, and, though her appearance has changed, her affection has not. One day he appeared with not a tooth in the froot of his mouch. They had fallen out. His gums were so scorbutic from damp, want of air and exercise that they fell ont as he was eating a piece ot bread. He writes scientific articles for Nature and other journals, and she has been allowed to take them out of piisoa after the governor reads them. — _ > On One of the Back Rows. [San Francisco Chronicle. | I sat on one of the back rows at one ofthe last festival concerts. We had lots of fun, for it was not much use listening. Behind me sat a very well- known lawyer andalady. They could uot see much of the stage, even. Mums. Rive-King cvme out to play a piano solo, It wes a loag one, but we could not hear. ‘lue lady hehind me, got up and looked at the stage, after a long Walt, ‘Oh, may ! She’s a-going it yet.” -_> « — Onion Flavoring. [Tid-Bits. ] One way to prepare ouion flavoring for a vegetable soup is to take a large onion, remove the outer skin, then stick cloves into the onion and bake it until it is nicely browned. The peculiar flavor thus gained, is relished by the epicure, oe oe There are in England one hundred und eigbty-seven ragged schools, which are attended by fifty thousand chil- aren.
