May 6, 1963. l I By RALPH CAMERON Guardian-Patriot staff Writer Buzzing rumors of the im- pending appointment of a new lieutenant.governor to take over from Hon. F. alter Hyndman are keeping political and social circles in a mild uproar. Apparently the field has na-r- rowed to two choices, with only faint rumblings being heard of possible alternates. Appointment Of New It. Governor Pending of platform speakers and a standing ovation he received from the capacity attendance. Mr. MacNaught expressed the thanks of himself and his wife for the loyalty of Liberal \vork- ers and supporters. Recently. both he and Mr. MacDonald told t h e writer they would accept the “I post DEEMS IT HONOR Mr. McIsaac said at the time: “The position of lieutenant gov- ernor is one of great honor and responsibility at all times, a n d undoubtedly will entail even greater responsibilities and du- ties during the forthcoming Cen- tennial term. I certainly deem it an honor to have my name considered." Another factor involved. al- though not necessarily ironclad procedure. is the rule of the past that, whenever possible. the post alternated between Protestant and Roman Catholic nominees. Both Mr. McIsaac and Mr. Fo- ley are Roman catholics. Mr. MacDonald is a Protestant. Over the past years. one some- what unusual factor has entered into considerations of acceptance of the position and that is pecun~ iary loss generally suffered by incumb o n t s at Governm e n t ouse. EXPENSES HEAVY Expenses of holding the p 0 st have been heavy. due primarily to the many demands made on the lieutenant governor to pro- vide entertainment for distingu- ished visitors. The latter. in re. cent years. have included Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and Highness Prince Philip. Many other members of royalty have also been guests in the historic, old residence, E M WEATHR - . In addition to house guests. there is the even more pressing matter of constant pressure to receive special guests, such as visiting dignitaries, entertaining at formal receptions and b a 1 l s. and almost maintain ‘open house' for heads of delegations or var- ious convention groups.
