We thus have an opportunity to learn what are our ad- vantages and drawbacks as seen by in- telligent outsiders, and if we are wise we may prodt by their observations, or at least learn something theretrom.Recently Tan Gnanniair enjoyed such an oppor- tunity oi conversing with a number of _ tourists convened in the odioe of the Queen Hotel. They were from various ports-Nsw York, Boston, Philadelphia, Chicago and Western Canada. There was among the group a general consensus of opinion as to the healthful- ness, enj oyableness and general excellence ‘of our summer climate and the quiet, pastoral beauty of our scenery. The opinion was freely expressed that these attractionsware not sniiiciently known, that not one in a thousand of prospective tourists have had their attention direct- ed to the Island, and that the Provincial Government ought to take the matter up and have the facts set forth, especially in New England the Middle and Western States and the Inland Provinces. There wasjnst one dlssenter from this view. This gentleman stated that he had been visiting the Island for years and its chief charm to him, after the climate, was that it is “unhackneyed.” “Keep it just as it _ is,” he said. “Advertise . it and fill it up with a great rush of summer visitors and you will spoil it all. Ht will lose all its freshness and become, like all other crowded summer resoits. They are all alike. As soon as the great rush comes, pi-ioesgo up and no visitor can get the worth of his money.” A New York man, of English birth, however, who - had come hither 'for the .drsi time this year, expressed himself as delighted.“‘For five years past I have gone toluskoka, Ont.” he said, “but last year thirteen of na staying in one hotel there contracted typhoid fever. we wont go there anymore. This year I came through Caps Breton, and found it delightful., but thislalnssdiaaheadofthomall. It is so rich. Your water hero in Charlottetown is superb, and when a man has once had typhoid fever from had‘vYh.ter he thinks about the water supply.” After neinarkirng upon the fine fishing he had enjoyedonbuiik River, he added, “I am coming back next year.” “This is the best place to sleep I have struck,” remarked another. “The nights are cool, almost too cool in fact, compared with the day, and one soon learns that he needs covers on his bed. I can sleep ehlit or nine hours here, whereas in Boston I could hardlysleep at all sometimes. There is less noise and racket in the night and early morning than in almost any other 1 city I visit." A number of the tourists were much interested in the butter and cheese industry, and others complained of the diiliculty of obtaining statistical »nots, aontrihutes tothe onrrslt l\Hll\5°\‘ _‘is was ai' the beginning or tus nine. __ increased to fifteen.
