If those fellows who persist in this high try to determine what the true use of hockey sticks is, then we are sure they'd arrive at the right conclusion. ow about it, boys: PARKDALE ROYALS are a worried lot these days and their able defenceman, John Bellevance, is the cause of the worry. : Bellevance is a valued employee with a construction com- pany here (they are doing the P.E.I. Hospital job) and his bosses are 2 bit worried about him receiving an injury. Last season John was sidelined for quite some time and his employers are not sure the same thing won’t~happen again. When this column was written, it was very doubtful if Bellevance would. be in the lineup when Navy and Royals clash tonight. However, the Royals’ management still have hopes of hanging on to their ace rear- guard and we hope they are successful. Chaps like Bellevance are certainly an asset to any league. : In the shorl time he played here, he has proved decidedly popular with players and fans alike. From all sides, we have heard nothing but praise for the work of Bellevance. We sincerely hope he can finish out the season. SAINT DUNSTAN’S Varsity hockey squad may be without goalie Earl Shepherd when they face Mount Allison in the first game of the N.B-P.EJ. Intercollegiate league at Saint Dun- stan’s rink on Friday night of this week Earl had to be stitched up after being hit im practice Tues- ‘day and the forehead injury, may keep him on_the- sidelines for some time. However, they've come quite a distance | since that showing against Parkdale Royals. Navy had better not treat that game lightly. Those col- legians could be quite a surprise. WHEN A REFEREE calls a penalty, he means what he says. All the talking in the world isn’t going to,make him change his decision. If he points the finger at you for tripping, off you go for two minutes. The same with hooking, roughing, elbowing and the other offences that call for minor sentences. ee This practice of penalized players following referees around and disputing the call should be at once. If the team captain wants a word with the official, all well and good. But even in this case the conversation is just a waste of time and that being the case, the said conversation should be very brief But how often have we had to watch players (not the cap- tain) chasing the referee around after he tagged them for a penalty. This foolish practice could be halted at once by handing out a misconduct as well as a minor. If players knew that ‘spouting off’ was. going to get them a.|' ten-minute sentence in addition to their minor, they'd skate off and not hold up the game with their utter nonsense. We'd like to see the officials start thig at once. Show over-talkative who's boss. Give them, the extra ten minutes. + Then they'll have plenty of time to talk: to themselves in the \ these Montreal 4124 9 8148 85 56 Chicago 42 17 16-9 116 124 43 |New York 42 16 16 10 115 121 42 | Detroit 40 16 18 6 98 111 38 | Boston 43 15 22 6 116 135 36 | Toronto 4213-20 9 98 118 35 planning on throwing any big scare into -the.. damage Wednesday night in tak- ing a unanimous 106-round de- | cision in Chicago Stadium.
