A more extended account will appear mournful mliiiuil iumrunwl UITAWA, March 16-Owing tho evidences that thore will sreai-ly increased activity in the Great Bear Lake minus; field. in 1934. Hon. Thomas Ci. Murphy, Minister of the Interior, has direct-, ed that the Bub-minlnghelecorderb Olllca at Cameron Bay raised to the status of a Mining Reoorderu office and that all the records re. lacing to the Great Boar lake field be izansferred from Fort smith to Cameron Bay as soon ss possible. The general increase in mining and prospecting activity will be greatly accelerated this year because of the expiration of the moratorium on representation work, and the change at Cameron Bay is to facil- itate all lines of activity by having the records immediately available! to miners and proqzectcrs in the. centre of the field, instead of nec-' essitatlng a trip to Fort Smith. That the mining pnopertim in the Northwest Terrtories are develop- ing la the keynote of the reports re- ceived by Hon. Mr. Murphy, from‘ officers in the field during the year 1933, with the trend. oi operations in the past season chiefly in the development od present holdings ta- wsrd a produ/.Lion basis. Great Bearlalreisstlllby fsrthemost important mining field in the Northwest Territories and develop- ment during 1033, while not spec- tacular was of great .significance as it practically proved that several promising properties have every in- dication oi becoming important producers in 1034 and 1035. The principal companies have carried out extensive trenchlng and diamond drilling with very sails-1 factory results and ln a number of cases shipments of ore and con- centrates have been made to r~e-- dllctlon plants ln British Columbia and Ontario. Following in the wake of this development activity, other improvements have been noted. such as cheaper and better trans- portation facilities both by air and water, improved radio communica- tion. extension of surveys, location of s doctor and aetablisnmeqt of a Royal Canadian Mounted Police detachment in the centre of activ- ity at Cameron Bay, and the erec tim od three saw-mills and the openinf of several stores. The ad- dition of $100,000 worth of equip- ment W improve transportation facilities on Great Bear Lake ix under consideration for the coming season by one of the leading trans- port companies. The various Govrenment Depart- ments have been active in assist- ing industry in the development ol the Great Bear Lake mining aren. The Department of the Interior- is charged with the administration of the Northwest Territories and con- sequently has played a leading role in this work. Maps of the country lying south and east of Great Boar Lake are in course of preparation in the Topographical and Air Bur- vey Bureau of the Department, based on serial surveys carried out in cooperation with the Royal Os-nedisn Air force. These maps will be of great assistance in the prospecting and development of this very promising district. Last year the Department cf the Interior also had s townsite laid out at Cameron Bay and to date over 100 lots have been applied for and numerous buildings erected. A survey was also made by the De- partment's Mining Inspector of the timber rosources adjolnim Great Bear Lake with a view to their ord- erly utilization. Other departments are sctivc in this ares. The Department of Pub- lic Works is irnpzov-ng conditions for water transportation at several poinm; the Department of Justice has established a Royal Canadian Mounted Police detachment at Cameron Bay; and an up-to-date wireless station has been installed at the same point by the Depart- ment of National Defence. The search for gold was actively pressed by prcspectors in many parts of the Northwest Territores during the past year and uncon- firmed reports indicate that lm- portant discoveries of placer gold were made in the South Nahanni country. Last fall two proepectcrs returning from the South Nah- anni ares which lies-in the south- western palt of the Territories and Glues to the territorial boundry be- tween the Yukon and the North- west Terriwries, reported that they had washed some rich lrsvel on llcleod creek and obtained a fslr quantity of coarse gold. Although crm-ian or me Department er me Interior were unable to confirm this report by personal interview, the news Qresd rapidly and s small rush niulted. By the end of De- cembor there were approximately 100 placsr claims staked. The original discoveries were on Mcliecd creek and twc other small feeder creeks, the Diamond and the Canyon. It is also rsporiad that claims have been staked on oraela running into Plat and Prairie riv- ers, which together with the Hc- lsod are tributaries of the South Nahanni river.
