continued from page 8 rate it as a tie between McCarville and Johnson. The one thing that I did miss was the candidates asking students to vote period. They asked for students to vote for them but the reality here is that UPEI’s apathy can be best measured by voter turn out. My word of caution to those who choose not to vote is be careful who you criticize and bitch about when you have removed yourself from the pro- cess. So I encourage all to get as much informa- tion as possible from the candidates and vote accordingly. Actually, forget that, just vote. See CRAP Comes Alive... Big things are happening on Canada’s right wing. The NHL trading dead- line saw players change jersey’s and one of the classiest players in _ hockey, Ray Bourque, consent to be traded to the Colorado Avalanche to pursue the ultimate goal, the “Stanley Cup.” But sports is a few pages further down and I want to talk about a new participant looking to achieve the supreme goal in Canadian politics, Prime Minister. That man is 50 year old Alberta Treasurer Stockwell Day and he has thrown his hat into the CCRAP ring to challenge Preston Man- ning. On the outside he looks like the perfect candidate for our image conscious 21* century society. The Red Deer MLA roller blades, jogs, plays volleyball, and has a This former auctioneer and Bible school adminis rator has been a firm op- pore: of homosexuals eing included jn the ° Alberta Human Rights Act ae boylike innocence to him. In other words, he is the opposite of Presto (which is good). However (usually a precursor word before the bad comes out!!), he tends to have a few scary at- tributes. This former auc- tioneer and Bible school administrator has beena firm opponent of homosexu- als being included in the Alberta Human Rights Act which has raised prob- lems for him in conserva- tive Alberta (if itis difficult there, imagine how that will fly in the rest of Canada!). My second concern is his outspoken position against abor- tion. Now on the right wing some might call these things good. But I prefer to disagree. I would tend to look at these stands as being very narrow. Appar- ently, he is open to change but these things are funda- mental philosophies and if has gained popularity in Quebec when he suggested that the convention date be moved back from June 24" (St. Jean De Baptiste Day in Que- bec, which is a holiday). It has also gained him some disenchanted Federal Conservative MP’s who are not so big on Joe Who be a better change them, one could not help but wonder if he would bend on other things too. Which is what a leader is not suppose to do and not what they are elected to do. All that being said, Day has obvi- ously shaken the right. He question). He is also the man to have put into place a provincial flat tax of 11% which means everyone pays the same amount of tax. His entrance has put enough of a scare in Manning that when Day an- nounced he was entering the race, Manning attempted to upstage him by announcing his resignation as Opposition Leader in the House of Commons (which went to Deborah Grey) so that he could focus on his campaign. Seeing Manning quiver is admittedly a pleasant sight and while I would not be one to lean to the right, it is encouraging to see compe- tence enter the field to represent those who have not been well represented on a federal level in our country. But I can not help but wonder if parallels exist in this campaign with the title of one Tragically Hip CD called Day for Night...
