It has been announced that General Sir Redvers Buller will have the in South Africa., and that General i Sir George Stewart White, will, under Ge ieral Buller, have command of the forces in Natal. Sir Bidvers Buller was born sixty years ago and has seen active service in eight campaigns in Asia .ind Africa.. In six of these he received honorable mention. He received t_he Victoria Cross for personal heroism during the Zulu war, when he rescued two offic- ers and a private, who but for his as- sistance would have been slain. He fought with distinction in the As- .hantee war of 1873-4, the Boer war of 1881, the Egyptian war of 1882, the Soudau expedition of Sir Gerald Graham in 1884 and the Soudan expedition of the following year under Sir Garnet, now Lord Wolseley. In the second Soudan campaign he ,was General Wolseley.’s chief of st-aff, and later took command of the `Desert Column, extricating it from its peri- lous position at Gubat- and winning the battle of Abou ,Kl'ea. Sir Red- .vers was also once commander of the forces in Ireland. His experience in the Boer war of. 1881. his knowledge of the country and of the enemy he will have to meet, and above all his military skill and resolute fighting qualities, were no doubt the factors which led to General Baller being se- lected for co nmand in South Africa at the present time. i General Sir George Stewart White who will have command of the small- er force operating from Natal, is sixty. _feur years old. and has seen such I active Efservice, chiefly in India. He served there during the great mutiny of 1857,in the Afghan var .of _ 1878- will be seen that in the event of war British forces will be in capable and veterar hands. -il. list of the donations to educational institutions in the Republic during 720.617. Twenty four of these don- ations range from $100,000 each up- ward to the princely gift of Mrs. Stanford. The contradictory reports as to Hon. Mr. Tarte’s health since his return to Canada have been remarked upon. The Ottawa Free Press, which is no doubt well-informed as well as most friendly to the Minis*-er of Pub- lic Works, says: The state ol Mr. Tarte’s` health is . not too good. Copies of ancient inscriptions dating before t-he time of Moses, are given, containing accounts of the -creation, the fall of man and the flood. Assyrian tablets, the famous Rosetta stone; the Moabite Stone; photo- graphs of King Pharaoh and his wife, and of the Tel-el-Amarna tablets are among the numerous illustrations.
