Thie ie the conclusion that will be ar- rived at all over the Provinee and through- out Canada as the jnews of result of the election of yesterday is flashed along the line. The result is the more remarkable in view of the confidence of Mr. Wise and those who took part in the canvases with bira that it would be otherwise. On Fri- day last, there was as nearly as possibles absolute certainty that the iseue would be a vietory for the Opposition. The meetings, particular- ly in the north of the district, seemed to Queen's and, express overwhelmuiog condemnation of Pineau Politics and an Administration which is eurely (and not slowly) carrying the Province into bankruptcy aad ruin with the sccompaniments of heavy tax- ation and loss ofantonomy, The opposition speakers were heard, for the most part with attention and applauee. But other jpfluences than those of eloquenee were exerted at the last,—and Mr. Wise was defeated by a majority ef 300. We shall not just now discuss the sa- ture of those “otber influences.” We shal! not make any charges. The die has been cast, and the second district of Queen’, stands before this Province and all Canada as champions of the Farquharson admin- istration, the policy of taxation and debt, and Pineauism. Ifthe majority of the electors are hapry, we have no cause for complaint. But it is not unlikely that at least some of the electors, who do not care to stand in the eame condemaation as the majority, will inquire a little further into the matter. As for Mr. Wise he fought the batile of right manfally; and though he he® been defeated hecan sleep with a clear conscience, and go bask to the labore of the farm bearing mind at ease. The Second District of Queen’s base long beea Liberal ; and, in ordinary circumstances, he could not, is opposition to the Liberals, have expected to wina victory. But in the extraordinary circumstances by whieh the Farquharson ;Governteent is now sur- rounded—in view of the Government’s bad coaduct, aod the scandalous manner in which he has been treated as a result of hie protests against it, Mr. Wise had a right to expect that his uld frieude would have united witu his old opponents and ave given hima Jarge majority. But, ae in the case of many another man who has worked for the right, in the interest of his country, he has been disappointed. ae +++ e CIGARETTE-SMOKING is said to cause shortness of breath. Wel! perbaps the ' doctor will bring about an improvement in thie case. We shall see. —Ths Montreal Gazette remarke that Mr. Sifton’s Yuko» railway deal drove four Liberal members of Parliament into voting with the Opposition, and against the Government; Dr. Borden’s emer, ency food deal drove teu. According to one measure, therefore, Dr. Borden is more then twice aa big a politician as Mr. Sifton. —The Huntingdon Gleaner (Honest Liberal) helds that the rations case wae so bad that the Government should sue the contractor for the return of the money paid to him. The Ottawa Journal (Inde- pendent) takes the same line. This would certainly be ope way of repairing the wrong, by replacing the cash taken from the treasury, would wipe outa share of ite responsibility. —General Lord William Seymour, who has been in command of the forces in British Nortl America for the past two year, left Halitax on the 9b for London via New York. General Seymour, before departing, issued general orders warmly complimenting the Canadian militia and the Canadian ard British regulars for what heconsidered theirSyery fine work on the occasion of the firet of July mobili- gation of the troops. — The Moneton Transcript remarks :— “Time brings rapid ehanges.
