Someone about the Thompson Hotel has revealed the fact that one night last Feb- ruary, about the time Benwell was killed ® short thick set man came to the hotel. late at night and asked for a room. He was nervous and avoided everyone. Next morning early he left without eating any breakfast, and under the pillow where he had slept was found a thirty-eight calibre revolver, all the chambers containing re- cently discharged cartridges. The two bullets found in Benwell’s head were of thirty-eight calibre, and it wil! be remem- bered that no trace of the revolver with which he was shot has ever been found. It is thought that this is some “ American Colonel ” that Birchall is known to have been with a great deal in London, and it is believed that Birchall’s confession discloses the fact that this Stranger was the man that fired the shot.
