The Charlottetown Driving Park and Provincial Exhibition Association with its over half a century ofcontinuity, a record of which i’. is proud, will again have available on its zrounrls facilities for the display of the best liorsefl, Chit-IE, sheep, pigs and poultry in this beautiful Province ofours. Our Association wasipromoted by far sighted patriotic men who thinking of the better- ment of the Live‘ Stock Indusiiy built on beautifully situated land an Exhibition Plant that has been admired by many. The object for which it was built has been achieved in a man- ner far beyond the hopes of its authors, and today the great reputation which our horses cattle, sheep, pigs and poultry have on the markets of the world is due very considerably to the facilities afforded here. Our Governments very wisely encouraged these Exhibitions when other Provinces failed to do so and because of the continuity of Exhibitions and that encour- agement, Island Live Stock wer almost supreme throughout the Maritimes and elsewhere, wherever they showed in com petition. It will be the same when Exhibitions are resumed again in the Maritimes and elsewhere: Great credit must be given to the Exhibitors who have notwithstahding that they are ex- tremely busy, found time to prepare their animals and spare the time to show them. Recently a fire destroyed some of our finest buildings, but when our gates open this year for the Show ll. big new combined Fox and Poultry Show Building will be ready for $6, 000 in Prizes $6,000 in Prizes n-ioiis PRIZE LIST ions The 1945 prize list prepared under the direction oi’ the Minister of Agriculture and by a general committee of the Department of Agriculture and Live Stock Branch with prominent Exhibitors is the best in many years. The Poultry section has been carefully looked after, and there are also classes for Turkeys, Geese, Ducks, etc. The total prize list runs in the vicinity of $6.000 and is the best offered for years. Facilities for Exhibitors are being made ready and judging will take place on Wednes- day and Thursday mornings, Aug. 15th and l6th- commencing st 9 o'clock. Everyone lg in. vited to watch this interesting feature, and for the horses and cattle, judging rings, seats with ‘awnings, are provided. Everything points to this 1945 Exhibition being one of ‘the best held in_years. < We print with pleasure the following with reference to the 1944 Show. Road it and seq what others think of our Live Stock. EXTRACT FROM REPORT ON THE PROVINCIAL EXHIBITION OF 1944 The Provincial Live Stock Show of 1944 was the best that has been held hero since bo- fore the war, and some classes of dairy cattle far surpassed all records previously made. ‘This excellent showing of live stock was due to a suggestion advanced by Premier Jones which he later implemented by paying to classes of dairy breeds in which five or more breed- ers exhibited, an increase eqiinl to the amount originally offered in the prize list. While this did ‘not apply to cattle of the beef breeds the total increase in cattle entries over tho previous year was 60%, a total of 850 entries. The class of stock exhibited was equal to ‘the best shown in Canada. Mr. J. J. McCegue of Alliston, Ontario, judge of I-lolsleins, said. “there was lots of quality oii show and the top plzicings would provide keen competition anywhere.” Mr. Hugh J. Coulson. Editor of the Holstein-Friesian Journal, Toronlo- was enthusiastic about the entries. Equally compliment- ary remarks were made by the judges of the Guernsey: and Jerseys. 0f this latter class the judge, Elmer Ashton of Foster, Quebec, spoke very appreciotively, not only of ‘the quality, hut said he had never attended an Exhibition where the stock was so well trained and handled. The judge of the beefvbreeds, Mr. W. B. Trueman said; “a wonderful show and don't you think it wasn’t." He added, there was probably not a better show of beef cattle in 25 years. Horses attracted the largest number of spectators-Donald Black, M.P., from Quebec wiis the Judge, and noted a marked improvement in the quality. He judged both the light and heavy classes. The entries were up 30% over 1943. . Sheep entries were down, but the number of swine increased by 8% and the judge. J, Y. Graham wiiswery pleased with the exhibits, particularly of tho young stock. Tlio poul- try exhibits manifested a very high quality, some 0f the breeding pens exceptional. Our Association contributed in every way possible to make the Fair a success in ad- dition to putting the Plant at. the disposnhof the exhibitors, we had all the buildings properly sprayed and generously supplied with bedding The total expenses involved s considerable sum of money beyond the amount contributed by the Provincial Government. “ J.
