There are signs that trouble may arise in connection with the strike of ‘longshoremen in New York. Secretary Sehurz says the Indian Territory difficulty is in a fair way of being peaceably settied. Thirty thousand Nihilist prisoners are gathered at Nishni- Novgorod, waiting till the Volga opens, to be sent forward to Siberia. The £20,000,000 loan project has been abandoned by the Porte, and the scheme for the unification of the gen- eral debt resumed. News received from Eastern Siberia, dated the 25th of September, 1878, states that all the men connected with the Nordenskiold polar expedition were well, Srruck wy Licutninc.— A Mrs. Crowell, living at the N. W.*Arm, was struck by lightning on Monday morn- ing while rolling up the blind at a win dow, and wus temporarily rendered un- conscious.—// x, Herald. Tne “N. P.”—Montreal, May 19.— The barque A/fheld arrived to-day from Barbadoes with 270 tons raw sugar for the Redpath Refining Co. This is the second direct importation this season. —]Tr. Chronicle. Preacnine py TeLepHone.—Mr Mel- lor, a popular preacher at Halifax, England, recently had his sermon de livered by telephone as it was uttered to an audience at Manchester, thirty- six miles away. Not only was the preaching thus overheard, but the sing- ing of a hymn was reproduced almost perfectly. The interest taken in Canadian af- fairs by the citizens of the neighboring Republic will be further evidenced by the fact that the leading American papers will be represented at Montreal on the occasion of the Queen’s Birth. day celebration by special representa- tives. Mr. G. F. Williams is men- tioned as the Herald's representative ; Drysdale, N.Y. Zimes; J. B. Hendricks, N. Y. Sun; Ackerman, N. Y. Star; Major Wheeler, Brooklyn Lagle ; Green, Brooklyn Union-Aryus ; C. M. Skinner, Brooklyn Zimes. The Tribune and World will be also represented, as well as two other papers in New York, but the names of the correspondents have not been ascertained. A REMARKABLE Suit or CLoruEes.— The Emperor ot Austria has just been presented with a remarkable suit of clothes. The wool from which the garments were made was upon the sheeps’ backs eleven hours before the suit was completed. At 6.08 in the morning the sheep were sheared; at 6.11 the wool was washed; at 6.37 dyed; at 6.50 picked ; at 7.34 the last carding process was finished; at 8 it was spun; at 8.15 spooled; at 8.37 the warp was in the loom; at 8.43 the shuttles were ready; at 11.10 seven and three-quarters ells of cloth were completed ; at 12.3 the cloth was fulled ; at 12.14 washed; at 12.17 sprinkled ; at 12.31 dried; at 12.45 sheared; at 1.07 napped; at 1.10 brushed, and at 1.15 pressed and ready for the shears and needle. At 5 o'clock the suit, con- sisting of a hunting jacket, waistcoat and pantaloons, was finished. The free trade policy of Great Britian was the subject of an animated discus- inthe British House of Lords a few weeks ago, brought up on a motion of Lord Bateman, to the effect that it was expedient in all future oommercial ne— gotiations with other countries to advo cate a policy of reciprocity in place of free trade. His main argument was an arraignment of free trade as the prin- - cause of the distress and depres- sidn the nation is now passing through. The Duke of Rutland seconded the motion, and in his speech warned the the House that “a vast majority of the people were with them.” The Govern- ment opposed the motion, and of course it was lost, but the subject has been continued in the newspapers ever since. This is evidence that the fortress of free trade, which in many minds was thought to be unassailable, is not so in.’ vulnerable as they imagined. Discri- minative protection is not the “ craze ’ that many would feign make them- selves believe it is. - = aE To Fresnen Satt Frsr.—M ny per- sons, who are in the habit of fresi ening mackerel or other salt fish, never dream that there is a right and a wrong way to do it. Any person who has. seen the process of evaporation going on at any salt works, knows that the salt falls.to the bottom. Just so it is in the pan where your mackerel lies soak- ing; and, as it lies with the skin side down, the salt will fall to the skin and there remain; when, if placed with the flesh down, the salt falls to the bottom of the pan, and the fish comes out freshened as it should be, In the other case it is nearly as salt as when put in, . * APRIL 18th, 1879 SPRING REQUIREMENTS. B. Hanprye, Esq., Brockville, Ont.:— Dear Str—It is now two years since your ‘“‘Censtitutional Catarrh Remedy’ was intro- duced tome. I have waited this ong to see if the cure would remain permanent before do- ing this, my duty, to ) -u,as at first the happy efiects seemed to me to be ‘‘too good to be true.” 1 was afflicted in my head for yeats before I suspected it to be Catarrh. In reading in your Circular [ saw my case described in many par ticulars. ‘he inward ‘drop’ from the head had become very disagreeable, and a choking sensation often preventing me from lying long, I would feel like smothering and be compelled to sit up in the bed, My health and spirits were seriously affected. When your agent came to Walkertownin August, 1876, I secured three botties. Before I had used a quarter cf the contents of one bottle I found decided re- lief, and when I had used two bottles and a third. I quit taking it, feeling quite cured of that ailment, and have not used any since until of late I have taken some for a cold in my head. A sense of duty to sufferers from that loath- some disease, Catarrh, prompts me to send you this Certificate, unsolicited, with leave to make what use of it yon may see proper, Yours truly, W. TINDALL, Methodist Minister. Port Elgin, Ont., Aug. 24, 1878. Ask for Littlefield’s Constitutional Catarrh Remedy and take no other. T. J. B. Harpine, Dominion Agent, Brock- ville, Ont.
