Let the_husbandman be ever so assiduous in cultivating the soil, ln sowing good seed, yet if it be not watered with the dew from heaven, his harv- est will not be abundant. So wlll lt be with parents in the cultivation of their children’s souls; if their endeavors are not blessed by God all will be to no purpose: “I have planted, Apollo watered, but_God _gave the increase,” (1 Cor. iii, v.6) “Unless the Lord bulld i_;he house, in vain they labour that build lt.” ,(Ps. 129, v_. 1.) Plous parents will therefore daily commend_their children to God beg - ging Him to preserve from sln their souls redeemed by the precious blood of Jesus Christ. GOOD EXAMPLE Men are so formed that they are ready to follow the example of others rather than to listen to their words of counsel. Owing to this imitative tendency in human rlal:~ ure we find people inhabiting the same locality practising the same customs and manners. On account of our cor- rupt inclinations and evil passions we naturally tend to follow what is evil rather than what is good. Children incapable of judging fully right from wrong act chiefly -by imitation. They are inclined to imitated their parents, rather than others on account of the esteem and venera- tion in which they hold them. They unconsciously feel that they have a natural right to copy from them. If parents therefore add to their instructions the incentive of good example they will produce the best of fruits. On the other hand if their example is indifferent or evil, their words will be of little avail. This is especially the case where parents give to their children the example of self lovewhich coincides with the natural tendencies of the child. So deep will be the impression produced on the mind of the child that it will with thegreatest difficulty be eradicated. To what purpose advise your children not to swear, not to y.ield‘tofpassion, not to use profane -words or ,give way to anger, i you yourself commit these very 'sins? Of what avail for parents to counsel their children to be faithful to God, frequent the sacraments, lead pious _ and fervent lives, if _they scandalize them by a life of neg- `lect and indifference? Christ pronounces a terrible sen- tence of woe upon all who would scandalize one of His little ones. How much more severe will be the punish - ment of parents who scandalize their own children?
