Page 13 March 4, 2009 By Whitney Bysterveldt Panther Post Intricate, whimsical and elegant, the latest avant-garde induction featured at the Green Man is a line of jewel- lery under the moniker Overman. The name itself is the English translation of the German “Ubermensch”’ a phil- osophical concept from Neitzche’s Thus Spoke Zarathustra but the artist behind the line is Charlottown native Matt Bowness. The initial stages of Overman began in November of 2008 when Bowness made himself a pair of cufflinks to conceal his tattoos at work. After many comments on the origi- _ nal pieces he furthered his efforts and quickly found a retailer for the prod- uct in an old friend, Kelly Caseley, owner of the Green Man. Influenced by the concept of skel- eton watches wherein the mechani- cal inner workings of the piece are ENTERTAINMENT Get Punk’ed! _ Burgeoning jewelry fad bedazzles clients of the Green Man revealed as part of it’s semblance, Overman jewellery is constructed entirely of these ornate components. “T saw similar ones online, it was the smallness, how tiny the pieces were that inspired me” Bowness mused of the skeleton watches. Using micro-soldering techniques, tiny metal wheels, springs, crowns and bridges from vintage timepieces are fused to create smart pendants, rings, cufflinks, earrings and much more. These pieces are original and wear- able, reinvented from grandpa’s pock- etwatch to modern flare. Not only that but it’s environmen- tally friendly, Overman reclaims what would be otherwise trashed metals for his creations and is look- ing to expand into stained glass or lamps.
