Twelve years ago he passed through Otiawa en route for California with not enough money to take him to his destination, and now he returns worth over six miilions of dollars. He isa son of a farmer who resides near Pembroke, and who was obliged to sell one of his cows to assist the young man in reach- ing California. Before getting there, how- ever, Ryan, running short of funds, engaged with a farmer in Utah, and subsequently secured half his land in payment for wages. One day, whilst out prospecting fora site on which to build a house, he discovered goid. An assay showed that he had struck a bonanza, and a company was formed to work the mine. In avery short time he old out a half interest for $3,000,000. and later on he wiihdrew altogether, the con- sideration being an additional $3,560,600. fe sent for two of his brothers, who went into business with him, and they tco are immensely wealthy. Afier selling ont the brothers purchased ae which they worked successfully. an purchased the property for his ike see How enthusiastic M. de Lesseps has al. ways been as to the success of whatever enterprise he undertakes is known to the worlé. As to the Panama Canal, he is not only centident that he wil be able to can- struct it, and: construct. it so as to be a memorial to all coming ages of the enginsering skill of his time and especially of himself, but is also sanguine as to its ability to pay. In this hopeful spirit he is not, however, blindly followed by all those whom he desires to influence. The great engineer calculated that the tonnage of the annval ship traftic wonid amount to the enormons figure of 6,000,000 which wonld certainly go far to compensate for the ex- traordinary expenses incu rred in its con- struction. An American financier, Mr. M. J. Nimmo, has made caiculations which mater reduce this esiimate. In fact, he says that the annual tonnage of the ves- sels which will pass through the canal can- not exceed 1,625,000, which, he argues, would be altoyeth: or insvflicient to satisfy the shareholders. Many of the latter are naturally alarmed at thes@ arithmetical forebodings, but M. de Lesseps still main- tains his air of courage and confidence, and denies that there risk of failure. . > ially aoa) ¥ is any financial Sir Bartle Frere seems to bike his recall very much to beart, and to be inclined te ay nm about it On him more than on any ne else mus. rest the responsibility of the a Zuin war, which he did not seem very auxious to avert. The defeat of ihe Beaconsfield Government was an emphatic eondemnation of his administration, in so fir as that was concerned, and his recall is the natural and inevitable consequence. The wonder is that it has been so long de layed, and that Sir Bartle Frere had not the manliness to follow the example of Lord Lytton, and save the new Gevernment the trouble of humiliating him. : i A good demand exists in the American markets for Canada lambs, several lots having sold in New York and Albany with- in the past few days at top on, in the latter city they commanded $5.25 @ 85.30, silver five ond ten cent pieces, bear- g the date of 1880, have been recently Por into circulation, WY err a1eW i : i, } Tur Montreal Guzette says ‘* A decline of sc per lb has taken place in refined sugar. -The importance of re- Teachers | Granulated is now quoted in that city at 104 @10jc. and cut loaf at 10h¢ @ 103. This circle of change has been going on ever since man has be- came an occupier of the earth. He feeds on the lower animals and on the seeds of plant, which in due time become a part of himself. The lower animals feed upon the herbs and grasses, which in their turn be- come the animal ; then by its death pass inte the atmosphere, and are ready once more to be assimilated by plants, the earth or bone substance alone remaining where it has been deposited. ,G2C0 The crisis in the Sandwich lalands was a strange one. There was fear that the palace would be rs were his crea- attacked. and there was strony talk of de- throning His Majesty and placing Oneen Emma on the throne. In the meantime the King had the palace grounds guarded by cannon. The foreign ministers resident would not recognize Moreno; and finally the King, after holdiig out as long as he could, gave in and asked Moreno to hand over his portfolio. At last accounts the people were talking of tar and feathers, and had ordered Moreno to leave the isiands im the first place.
