TELEGRAPHIC From Yesterdav’s 5 o'clock Edition, Lonpox, May 19—A despatch from Paris to the Daily Mail says that negotia~ tions are being conducted to secure peace between the United States, which the former is willing to make if al lowed to retain Porto Rico and the Philip~ pine Islands, or possibly only the latter M. Hanotaux, the French Foreign Minister, is prepariog the way for media~ tion, and Austria is working in the same Spain avd direction. Mapaip, May 19.—One of the first acts of the new Cabinet’ will probably be the expulsion from Spain of all correspondents of American newspapers. Similar steps will be taken against British correspondents who send cespatch- es regarded as objectionable. Miniiterial circles continue to emphasize the view that Great Britain is guilty of the war, inasmuch as she opposed the com mon action of the powers in the direction of peace and afterwards favored the United States, thereby violating all sentiments of justice. New York, May 19.- A special cable to The World from Kingston, Jamaica, says that a telegram from Port Morant dated a 4 o’clock, etates that the lighthouse keep r at Morant Point, to the extreme eastward of Jamaice, reports that a aumber of steam ships, apparently warships, were pass- ing. They were going northward ata tremen ous rate of speed and heading in the direc on of Santiago de Cuba. Wasuineron, May i9.—Secretary Long gave out yesterday the welcome informa tion that the battleship Oregon, the second largeet craft in the American navy, had successfully completed her long trip from San Francisco and was now safe. Whether or not she has jvined Admiral Sampson’s fleet the Secretary would not say. Aside from this bit of information Secretary Long said, at the close of offize hours, that there was no news to be given out. The cruiser Charleston sailed from Sano Francisco yesterday to join Admiral Dewey at Manila and should arrive there in about twenty-four days, allowing a couple cf days at Honvlulu for coal. Maprip, May 19, (2 p. m.)—An officiel] despatch from Havana says that the food supply ofthe city is assured for a long time, vessels arriving there from ull parts, from the United States, visions. New York, May 19.—A despatch to the ! Times from Washington says that Admira even with pro- Sampson is now, it is said, in a position to be regularly and frequently informed ct the appearance of the enemy and the Spanish admiral is now or soon wi:l le cut offand usable to turn in any direction in safety. We are bound to come up with him, said & prominent naval officer today, unless be decides to run for our coast, but that wi!] only defer the inevitable meeting for a few days. The longer he runs and dodges the shorter becomes his supply of fuel. Once that is exhausted he has no place to which he can resort for supplies except He may select either port he prefers. If it be Porto Rico Sampson would return and resume the bombardment. I do not, bowever, believe Admiral Carvera will permit bis fleet to be bottled op in @ harbor and shelled where it cannot manceuvie. That would condemn him for both unseamanlike conduct and for criminal waste of the power of his fleet. Naval ctticere consider the suggestion of a dash for the cosst of the United State @ one of the pozsibilities, If that were to be uudertaken it woul. be by vessels not in the squadron now in Sav Juan or 4avana. the Caribbean sea. The danger from that source is regarded as very as the? ‘ Ce ee equadron is proceeding by a northern route. It cannot avoid being seea by vessels bound east along the usual routes. If it is travelling by a northern route out “of the usual line of scouts tle United States navy are almost certain to to sight it. Bauirax, May 19.—Archbishop O’Brien today expre-sed himself as decidedly op- posed to the action of Ecgland in inter- fering with the coal trade. He disputes the power of the home Government to probibit the sale of the output of mines, and brands it as ao un- justifiable interference with the commerce of Canada, The fact that Great Britain alone *has taken such a stand in regard to coal, caus ed His Grace to express the opinion that it was a direct move on her part to favor the United States. He would urge on Canadians the neces- city of protecting their interests, and claims for them the right to act in the matter as tbey see fit. Key West, May 19 ,—The flying squad~ ron will sail today. The tug Leyden is en with another expedition. New York, May 19.—A German war ship entered Havana Harbor today with- out paying the customary salute to the American warships keeping the blockade harbor. This action is regarded as a significant indica- tion of Germany’s attitude. Havana, May 19.—Three American warships today bombarded Moro Castle at Santiago de Cuba. was done. No details of the engagemgnt have been received, Loxpon, May 19.—Mail news received here today from Las Palmas, Canary I-land+, nt der date of May 7 says that two Spanish torpedo boats arrived there that evening covered with salt as after a long route to Cuba at the entrance of the Only slight damage voyage. Bripcewater, N.S., May 19.—A_ repor, from Geleson Cove, made by reliable per- sons, says that nine warships were sighted this morning off Indian Island, Cape La- ‘ dave. , They were heading in a sontherly di- rection, Maprip, May 19.—At a meeting of th Cabinet last evening it was decided that the only policy that the present Ministry could possibly adopt in the interests o! the nation was an energetic prosecution of the war. - eee es Se Are gaining favor rapidly. e Business men and travel- lers carry them in vest i Ss pockets, ladies carry them in purses, housekeepers keep them in medicine closets. friends recommend them to friends. #ic Valucble Proprety FOR SALE The White House, Dundas Esplanade is offered for sale.
