A Mc- Lean. Mr. Mclean is a native of the Belfast district, in close and constant touch with its people, and highly popular ; and he is, at the same time, resident at the ; seat of the government where he will al- ways be at hand to promote Belfast's inter- ests, Under present conditions the peo~ ple of Belfast are likely to {prefer hiin to | any nominee of those who continue to follow Premier Farquharson. At any rate, it will test Mr. Irving’s ingenuity ard consistency to justify tothe public those who, pledged to make ends meet, have incurred debt and liabilities amounting to a million of dollars, and those who pledged to prohibitioa have licensed the liquor ceglers of Charlottetown. — Pee HOW NOT TO DO IT. Tue Federal Governmeat has sent the new winter steamer Minto to the danger- ous coast of Sable Isiand at a season when'the weather is likely to be boisterous; and it keeps the old winter steamer Stan- Jey idle in Charlottetown Harbor, though there is important work for her to do. About a month ago, the buoy at West Point went adrift. The Stanley was sent after it, and the buoy was taken on deck and brought to Charlottetown. It ie still bere ; andas no notice of the, loss of the buoy has been given steamers and veser ls passing our coast are not unlikely to go ashore at West Point. The cause of the long delay was said to have been the want of an anchor. An anchor was obtained from Halifax and has, we are informed, been lying at the Steam Navigation Com~ pany’s wharf for upwards of a week. Still the Stanley continues to Jie idle at Con- nolly’s wharf. Another example of How Not To Do’ It! — ee —— NOTES AND COMMENTS. —The new Attorney General cught to turn bie attention at once to violators of the Canada Temperance Act, —Mr. Tarte denies that he said toa re- porter of Tne Montreal Star, “It is very wrong to buy votes, when you don’t require them.” —The Conservatives of Antigonish County have nominated Mr. E. Albion bas a daily mail, the fact is, in a great measure, due to the pers severance and tact of Mr. Martin. The railway and bridge to which he refers as if they were already built are only yet in embryo. But when the smoke of party policy is cleared away, and those works are completed, every unbiased man will give causes Jong existing another reason for the early going of the Laurier Government. The contemplation of its way of doing things, werking on the mind ofa contribu.- tor to the Regina West, has produced a “Retrogressional,” of which the following is a sample :— Sir Wilfrid ‘said :—‘‘Your smash ; The tax on implements must go ;” He smiled—then sold us for hard cash To Maseey-~ Harris, Frost & Co. gyves I'll Mr. Martin credit for doing a great deal for both of them.
