II. .tiaoArtl:uI' II we may think of New York or London as great cities or activity. which indeed they are. yet with all their hustle and bustle. neither can boast the activity that goes on in an ant city. Here the wheels of industry never cease to turn. for there are neither Sunday's nor holidays in the ant kingdom. Day and night the workers toil alniost incessantly. taking care oi millions of babies, keeping a watchful ev on the precious eggs. watching over the feeble and aged. Thus thc struggle goes on from the cradle in the grave. only death relieves tn- worlcers of their cares and when they die. other toilers inter their bodies with as much care as we humans do our own dead. The Queen Ant is by far the most important insect in the colony, being the mother of almost the en- tire population. She is capable of laying eggs, some of which develop into sexless workers, while others produce future queens and drones. Strange as it seems. these sexless workers can, in time of need, lay eggs, but these eggs only hatch out miles. It takes from two to three weeks to incubate the eggs. when the new life begins, in the form of a grub. it is washed. fed and taken for an airing about the city every day. This duty is performed by the little nursemaids and we may be sure that there are thous- ands of them in every colony. Some species spin a cocoon around the grub in which it rests inert and foodless until nature opens the tiny piison to release :, perfect am. This transformation period is one of the marvels cf the insert world. Now that the baby ant has en- tered a new and strange world. it still must be fed and cared for by its elders. in much the same way as humans must core for tiny tots. Just as soon as they are old enough to catch on. they are taught to do all kinds of useful tasks such as building, nursing and what. have you. Finally they are permitted to join the army and leave the colony to wage war and help gather food. Of course the Queens do no physical labor. Their job is to lay eggs and see that everything about the place is kept spic nnd span. The mother ant is Queen of the do- mestic circle and on her shoulders rests heavy responsibilities, Every eoiony has its quota of feeble olrl drones, many of them not sufficiently strong to lend themselves. Nothing is done about these star-boarders until swarming day comes around. Then they are forced out-of-doors where. in their feeble eolldltlnn, they soon fall prey to birds and other insects. Many young Queens also find themselves outside for the first time. So they must do something: about it. The more fortunate ones are invited in join other family groups; but the ninjni'ity of them start colonies of their own. When they settle down in their new surroundings. they break off any use for them again. The swarniing day saw their first and last. flight. It. so ll.'lDp9ll.K that orrasionaliy a colony must. leave its city to seek rt, new home and when the time for the exodus draws near. there is a great. excitement in evexy part of the colony. First attention is given to the ant children and the precious eggs. Nothing is left in chance, lti all the world of living creatures. you will not find more devoted mothers in time of crisis. Once the ants begin their march- and a well-ordered march it is-it host of other insects follow. These are not prisoners. but are special guests of the ant family. or in some cases, pets. Every colony hns its guest insects which are fed and cared for gratis. that is. all but the ophairls which supply it sort of m.lk for the ants called honeydew, so fond are the ants of this sticky sweet substance. they make a prac- haids in late fall. eggs are collected from living plants and carried to their underground nurseries where they are carefully stored until spring.
