At a distance, say I from the deck of a steamer skirting along the coast, the I Island really resembles a massive garden, the distance lending enchantnient and converting its outlined farms p into garden beds, its clumps of trees into shapely flow- C er beds and shrubbery. G In one of his addresses in Charlottetown during n his recent visit Rev. Dr. Pringle made the statement C that the grain and vegetable fields in France and Flan- ders were more trimly kept and more carefully culti- 5 vatcd than the best kept gardens in Prince lidward n Islainl. 'l`liis, of course, is trite of every intensively cultivated country, a condition known only in Europe Z where land is valuable, and absolutely unknown on d this side of the Atlantic where in many places farms I can be had for the asking, and in our own province for t ii bagatelle in comparison with prices in the thickly C populated countries of Europe. \\`e do not expect for many years to come to see this Island intensively cultivated in the sense in which farming is done in Europe, where the land lying waste along the fences of any one of otir farms in Prince Edward island would be regarded as a regal posses- sion. But we do expect to sec a better claim to our distinctive appelation “The Garden of thc. Gulf,” our lsiilnd is not by any means :1 garden; it is not even a well-ciiltivatcrl farm. Much of it is fairly well ciilti- vzitcd 1 the greater part of it is not, while very much of it is absolutely wasted. Reformation in this respect iiiust begin with the young. .\iid this reformation is now in progress with the new movement iii education. “.\ garden at every home and garden instruction in i-very school in thc Garden of the Gulf." From the .study and cultivation of the garden to the study and ~ cultivation of the farm is only a step and the young who arc noyi' being trained will take the step. Land is becoming more and more valuable every year. \\`hen the war is over and things settle down to the new conditions there will be a higher value placed on land and upon all other sources of production. There will be less waste of land and material and energy when men settle down to face entirely new conditions. _ cniiditioiis iiiade new by the vrastage of war :incl the -ing_ paid. _This is the side of the question that Cana- ians have not yet begun to consider. The iiionthly etter of the Canadian Bank of Coniniercc, just issued or May, has this significent paragraph. It is worth onderiiig carefully: . “There are many evidences that the public are not o-operating as fully as hoped with the efforts of the l overnment to encourage thrift. Large quantities of ierchandise are being brought into the country that annot be classed as necessary, as evidenced by the im- ortation of artificial flowers to the value of $433,771, uring the eleven months ending February last, as iucli as during thc preceding twelve inoiiths. .\uto- iobiles, musical instruments, fancy silks and soaps are cing imported on as large It scale as ever. Such a cmand for tion-essentials could not exist if the pub- ic were seized with the seriousness of the existing si- uation and of the necessity for husbanding our resour- es to the last penny. Lives have been and are being freely offered in the causc_ of the Empire, and while this splendid voluntaryism continues it remains for all who are debarred by s_ex,_by age or by circumstan- ces of any kind from making the supreme sacrifice, to husband the power to resist the enemy by thrift of every description, and it is the duty not alone of the Government, but also of the business leaders of the nation, to see to it that' their influence is exerted in every possible way to foster thrift, iii order that the savings thereby cffcctcd may be placed at the disposal of the nation. PREPARING SZ 5 BIG DRIVE Since shortly after the war begun, there have been frequent predictions that the iinal move was about to be started. Most of these predictions have been based on some insolated movement of troops, whereas, the only logical prediction should include the whole coin- prehcnsive system of all the Allies working together. ' The very recent transfer of Russian troops ,from the eastern battle front to France, at the time when thc Russian is driving the Turks out of Asia and comple- tely closing thc only door of Germany, and when ionscquciit necessity for economy. ~Vei‘diin, is very sigiiiliraiit. lt iiidicatcs two ini- During the last decade of the old era, the drift was from the country city-ward. This drift was bringing about a coiidition wliicli was, even before the war, approaching the iiitoleralile. 'l`he army of producers was rapidly iliiiiiiiisliiiig while that of the consiiincrs was as rapidly increasing. The producer could notx have carried the ever increasing burden niiich longer. The war caiiic as a cliniax, producer and con- siiiner hcciinic niergcd in :i struggle thc cost of which iiiiist bc Iioriie by the two iii coiiinion. The end of the war will see another rcadjustment and in the new con- ditions tlie drift will be from the city to the country, froniitlie ranks of the consumer to those of the produ- cer for the \vorld will then have greater need of pro- duction than ever before to make good the wastage. \\'c, in l’rince Edward Island have a garden, a gar-'i den whose soil is rich or easily enriched, whose cli- mate aduiirably adapts it for the purposes of a garden, whose gcograpliical position makes" markets easily portant facts; first, that Russia is well able to liafidlc' thc situation along the entire eastern front, h_~rself, and second, that the Allies Eire already licgiiining to inass their troops on the wcsterii front iii preparzition for the death struggle that is to seal (ieritiaiiy's fate. l"rance, has whole classes in reserve- that havt; not yet fired a shot in this war, England has 2,000,000 inen- iii preparation in England, steadily preparing for the “liig llrivc," Russia has so iiiaiiy iiicii lhat she is sciid- ing l:irg¢_- niinibers to l"rance (25o,0oo :irc to be scnt) to take part in the big niovc, and Italy is more than able to hold the _Southern front. liquipnient of every kind is ample for present needs and accuinulatiiig for the eiiorinotis dcniaiids of the near future.
