As Mrs, Casper Mann and Mrs, Jose; Grosniick, two well-known ladies of tha section, were retursing home in a busy about sunset they heard an unnatur: | noise in passing ulong the road south of the Magnus quarry. ‘The noise was 4 cross between a bellow and a shrick ami excited the curiosity of the hearers, bul as they cculd not locate it but little at. tention was paid tu it, and th y con tinued on treir jourcey. fn approac.- ing a lonely spot on the road where large forest trees siund on-either side and the ground along is covered with under. brush they heard the awful nolse again. This time it appeared to come from the boughs of a larze tree just alead of them. As they avprached the tree there was a commotion in the branches, and the lovely and bh -lpess women were horrified to see a torrib.e-looking mon: ster descendiny from t.« tree coon-fash- ion, Their horse seemed paralyzed witli fear, and fora mwment refused to an- swer the frantic effort of the driver to force him ahead. As the animal reached the ground it gave a terrific snort and roar and starte! for the buggy. One of the occupants seized the whip and prepared for the at- tack. Recoveriug his power of locomu tion the horse started at a brisk gait down the road. Tien the race for life began. The strange monster, althoug) peculiarly constructed made excellent time, andin a few minutes had over- taken the buggy and was making frantic efforts to climb up on the Lox in the ear. The lady with the whip laid on Le tush with all ber might in the hope { frightening the fear(ul-looking ani- al off, but tie stings of the whip onlr seemed to infuriate it and increase iis determination to devour everything in sight. As the women were about to give up the fight and surrender themselves to the rapacious brute the joyful sound of the bark of a frieud!y dog fell upon their ears, and they realized they were near- ing a farm-house. To their gratification two tnen stepped out in the road a short distance in front of them, and it was but the work of a moment for the women to notify them of their terrible predica- { ment. As the men and dogs approach- ed, the animal seemed to sniff danger, and, with a rwur that could be heard for a quarter of 4 mile, whirled to one side and ambled through the bushes. As it made its way through the brush its course could be plainis discerned by the waving branches. The men, being unarmed, did not deem it wise to follow the animal, and the dogs showed ne disposition to take up the chase, More dead than alive, the women were assisted into the farm-house, where they were given such stimulants as were at hand, and when sufficiently recovered they related their exjcrieuce as given above. =: The animal, they say, was about seven feet long. It head waa long, and ended in a beak like an eagle's, its body was round, like that of an alligator, covered with scales and ornameited with a pair of wings, which would probably measure six feet from tip to tip. It had four legs, and its feet were cloven and covered with a hvec!. The smell of ite breath and body was terrible, and pervaded the atmosphere for some time after it had escaped to its retreat in the woods, In its effort to climb onto the buggy the animal left unmistakable proof of its hoofsomn ihe buggy-bed, there being deep cuts and scratclies all orer the rear of the vehicle. The spot where the animal made its appearance and the country for miles around is lonely and seldom frequented by farmers or others, and is certatnly just the place for a wild animal of any kind to seek its lair. Inquiry of scientists and naturalists fails to throw any light on the existence anywhere of such: an animal as this, and it is probable a searching party will be organized in the hope of capturing ir, and thu: adding auvother curiosity to zoology.—Greensourg cor. Cincinnati Enquirer. Women's Most Atiractive Age, The physical beauty of women should last until they are past fifty. Nor does beauty reach isa zenith unde: the age of thirty-five or forty. Helen of Troy comes upon the stage at the age of forty, Aspasia was thirty-six when married to Pericles, and she was a brilliant figure thirty years thereafter, Cleopatra was past thirty when s.e met Autony, Diane ae Poictiers was thirty-six when she won the heart of Henry If. The king was half ber age, but hiv devotion never cLanged. Anne of Austria was thirty- eight when de.eribed as the most beauti- ful woman in Europe. Mme. da Main- teaon was forty five when united to Louis, and Cathariae of Russia thirty- three wheu she seized the throne she ov- cupied for thirty-iive years. Mile. M was most beautiful «at forty-five, ant Mme. Recamier between the ages of thirty-five and fifty-five. The most last- ing and intense passion is not inspired by two decade beauties. Theold saw about sweet sixteen is exploded by the truer knowledge that the highest beauty does not dwell in immaturity. For beauty does not mean alone the fashion of forin and coloring, as found in a wax doil. The dew of youth and a complexion of roses sometimes combine in a face that is upmoving and unresponsive. The Future of Mind-Study, 80 much for the place and what 1s done there. Now, what is expected to come from this new psychology ? Do you fellows expect to sntopt puvent ways of thinking 7’ was once asked me. Who, can tell? Who. before Galileo, would have prophesied that man should weizh the stars or know their chemistry ? Yet there is much gruund for Ccomparwon between the position of physical sc ence then and that of mental science now. The popular opinion of to-day is perhaps even less awake to the fact that the world of mental p:enomena is a worid of laws, susceptible to scientific experi- mentation, that wasthe day of Galileo to the similar conception regarding physical phenomena, Have the physical sciences changed aught for man since the sixteeuth century { Then we must not forgot how slow was the growth, and how long it took ‘to arrive at the laws of gravity and conservation, not to mention those of evolution. Experi- mental psychology, as a systematic science, is almost younger than its youngest students. The mente! laws are as fixed and as determinable as the laws of physics. Who, then, shall say what man shall come to know of mental composition, of the great mental uni- verse, and of ourselves, its wandering planets, since minds may be known as well as stars !{—Herbert Nichols, in Mo- Clure’s Magazine.
