Thirty-seven members and one visitor attended the monthly meet- ing of the Parkdaie Womens In- stitute held in the hall on Monday night January 8th. The President, Mrs. J. R. Compton. presided. The minutes of last meeting were read by the secretary. Mrs. Helen Oumsnisley. Reports were given by convenors of the various com- mittees. Mrs. Ivan Vessey reported that the sick committee had sent two convalescent cards, seven sym- pathy cards and fifteen Christmas boxes to shut-ins of the community. Two mam-k ill in the hospital had been remembered with flowers. Mrs. Dollar gave a report of the school committee. Treats for the children had been purchased and gifts presented to the teachers and to the Leaders of the various organi- zations. Mrs. Frank Ross on behalf of the Institute extended a vote of thanks to the teachers for their efforts in the presentation of the Christmas concert. It was decided that a letter of appreciation be sent to Father Oorcoran for the treats given to the school children at Chris Mrs. Fred Jenkins gave a very interesting and instructive talk on Girl Guides and told of the work being done on the Island by this organization. Mrs. Compton gave 0. report of the hall building com- mittee. Mrs. Burns gave an encouraging report of the dinner held at the Experimental Farm on December fourteenth. Arrangements were made to cater to the Agriculture Group on January lath. It was de- cided thst five dollars be donated to the "T. B. Program 4 of the study book was dealt with and as the purpose of this program is to acquaint members with the living, working church in Japan, interesting re- ports on various phases of the work of the church in that country were given by Mrs. Tait. The worship service was led by Mrs. John MacDonald, the theme being. "God-wcrklng together with us". Following the singing of the hymn, "Standing at the Portal", ms. MacDonald read the scripture, after which she and Mrs. Willard Kelly. reading from the "Mission- ary Monthly" brought to members minds some very timely resolutions. such as rededlcating themselves to the work of God in their homes, their occuipatiorns. church and com- munity. Prayer led by Mrs. Weir hrcmht the worship period to a close. The installation ceremony of new- ly appointed officers for 1951 was very impressively conducted by Mr. Weir who reminded all that prayer was their first and most important duty. The business period was conduct- ed by the president and the annual report of the different secretaries were given. The recording secretary, Mrs. Willard Kelly gave a very en- couraging account of the year's work. Mrs. William Smaliwood. the treasurer. gave a very gratifying report. The total amount, raised for the year being 5245.00. The Cum- munity Friendship secretary. Mrs. Farquharscn. reported 164 house calls and 17 hospital calls having been made during the past year. The Supply Secretary was absent, but it was reported that three boxes had been packed and sent away during the year, one to Labrador and Newfoundiland. one to Canadian Church Relief abroad and one to the port workers in Halifax. The president thanked all mem- bers fcr their cooperation during the past year and asked that each should do her best in the coming year.
