The recent MIK continued decline in the
sl ock market has been niuch more pro-
nounced ln the industrial and othergtrust
i securities than in railroad stocks. In 1897
Donn’s Review published a table showing
the lluctuations in sixty lmportant` rail-
_ way stocks for nearly a generation pre-
vious. In that year the highest average
share. Last year at one time the average
rose to $116 a share. being pretty neanly
double the price of tive vears before. The
declines ot the past six or seven months
have brought down the average to 886 per
share-a lo.~s of $3) from the highest point
of last year,but still $26 above the average
price in 1897. Thus it appears that the
leading railway securities, awhile low as
compared with September last. are almost
proportionately high as compared with
s_ix years ago.
But what is true of the railway stocks
is not true of the- trust stocks. Eighteen
of the leading industrial stocks controll-
ed by the big trusts were able to sell
their shares when the trusts were first
formed at 'B60 a share. It will be seen
that the average price was thus practical-
ly tbq same asthe price of railway shares
since inflated during the boom cf .last
year, but the average has fallen to $47
per share. At the price at which the ilrst
investors or speculators boughtthem the
stocks of these eighteen trusts were
worth eleven hundred millions of dollars.
Within a week past they were worth
less, than eight hundred millions, Mr.
Morgan, who is the greatest of trust
leaders, attributed the decline in indust-
rial stocks to ,the mass of “undigested
securities.” The impression grows that
some at least of these securities are not
only “undigested” but “undigestible.” At
any rate the railway securities have been
holdin!! their own both in Canada and
colonial now  betwéentlii:-ae cities.
