dents from the class began tointerrupt her. One student, Daryl Condon, said, ““Why don’t youleave, We were enjoying the film’’ and then wanted to know whetherthey were going to need permission from their mothers to go toclasssoon. Another student, while pointing out the film made funof men as well as feminists, told Jelliffe to get out and mind herown business. Then some of the women in the class started to speakout with one noting that Professor LeClair had told them what thefilm was about on Wednesday and gave them the option to watch thefilm or not--and that she had not found any part of the film to be’’offensive.’’ Apparently at this stage Professor Jelliffe turned adeep shade of purple and stormed out of the classroom. She wasfollowed by Lisa Reiten who yelled something to the effect ‘‘theDean has already found out about this!’ and slammed the door. Atthis stage the class burst out laughing. One student noted that hethought it was a joke until he realised that Professor Jelliffe wasserious. Apparently the Dean had heard and so did CBC (mysteriously, cough, cough)and they in turn got ahold of both Dean Smitheram and ProfessorLeClair. The Department of Sociology and Anthropology then requestedsecurity for Professor LeClair’s class on Monday morning, as wella letter of complaint was being drafted by Professor LeClair thatwas to be passed on by the Dept of S & A to the Dean. The Dean took the movie home to review for the weekend. Professor LeClair explainedits connection to anthropology and he then received the Dean’ spermission (On Sunday evening, April 5) to show the second half ofthe film on Monday, April 6 in class. Apparently Professor Jelliffe herself became aware, one way oranother, of the errant manner in which she handled the situation, and called Professor LeClair to apologise Sunday evenin g. Theythen agreed to disagree on the nature of the film, Jelliffe stillbelieving that it may have some adverse effect on the pupils whowatch it. At the time this article was being written, writtenapologies from the parties involved were being sought. Lisa Reiten also announced her resignation as Presi- dent of the Soc/Anth Club with Bronwen Black to take over for the remainder ofthe year. This was probably an intelligent move on Reiten’s partas many in the club were planning to hold a vote of nonconfidenceconcerning her leadership early in the week. None were tooimpressed with the treatmen that anthropology Professor LaurieLeClair receive ‘The Backlash,”’ in conversations with a ; fewsociology or anthropology majors, were told tha Laurie LeClair isthe last person that anyone is goi | to call ‘‘sexist.’’ In conversations with members of the Class, ‘‘The — Backlash’’ did findsome that were offended... by Vaughn Jelliffe that is. BronwenBlack noted that sh was basically ‘‘in shock’’ during the wholeincident and quite shook up. Daryl Condon’s noted that LaurieLeClair pointed out in Wednesday’s class (April 1) that the filmwas a spoof of ‘ ‘feminists, women, men, machomen, academics, anthropologists, and Phil Donohue’’ while many of Daryl’s othercomments were not of the nature to be printed, Another student inthe class noted that she was i offended by Professor Jelliffe’ scondescending attituc and noted that the members of the class werevery to make up their own minds as to whether they wa toview the movie or not. Which allows ‘‘The Back « lash’’ to finish for the year on an ironic(and rathe 7 smug) note. For people who apparently are % “‘malechauvinist pigs,’’ promoting ‘‘racismand homophobia,’’ as well aswriting ‘‘hate literature’? (a well as offending a numerous numberof intoxicated petition signers) it is quite ironic that we seem j tounderstand better what many women on this campt feel than thecampus’ self-appointed Women’s Studie professor (note that thereis no Women’s Studies © major, minor, or programme oncampus and thusne¢ Women’s Studies professors). Funny that we wrote somethingalluding to attitudes such as those expose last Friday in Januarywhile noting that ‘‘[political correctness] is starting to make animpact at U.P.Ed Of course, as many people have tried to tellus, we just don’t know what we are talking about. So we shall conclude (feminists seem to like poet y so we thoughtwe would try ourhandatit):THE — DEAN IS GONE, THE PROTEGE FALLEN, THE: ELITES HAVE CIRCULATED, WITH A NEW AG DAWNING (try and swallow that one).
