Born in the small town of Peebles, Scotland, Mr. Muir served his banking apprenticeship with the Commercial Bank of Scotland and at the Head Office oi’ the Charter- ed Bank of India in London, Eng- land. He came to Canada in 1912 and entered The Royal Bank of Canada at Moose Jaw, Sask. Sub- sequently he gained experience in a number of Canadian branches, in the Inspectors Department in Winnipeg and at Head Office, Montreal. Atkinson. the new Gen- eral Manager, is a native of New- castle, N.B., and joined the bank in 191i. On leave of absence from the bank from 1914-1918, he serv- ed in the active forces overseas and was commissioned in the field in 1916. Later he was promoted to Captain and won the Military Cross at Passachendaelc. He re- sumed his banking career in 1919 and shortly after was moved to Halifax, where he served first in the branch and later in the Sup- ervisor‘s Department. In 1924 he was transferred- to Head Office, Montreal. and was responsible for the organization of the bank's Bond. Department five years ‘lat- er.
