Examine the worms closely, and upon about half | of them will be discovered from one to three little tiny white specks, half as large as apin-head. These are the eges of the | tachnia fly, and instinctively are deposited on the upper side of the worm, just back of the head, so that the worm may not! reach the young maggots with its jaws and destroythem. When these eggs hatch, 4s | they will in a few days, the larve will bore into the worm’s body and ultimately de- stroy it. a 2 a A Nautical Explanation. In « dancing one night a sailor was asked by a mess mate to explain to him, in a few words and as quick as possible, the third figure of a quadrille. His description was as follows: ‘* You first of all heave ahead. said he, ‘‘ and pass your adversary’s yard- arms; then in a jiffy regain your berth on the other tack in the same kind of order; slip along sharp and take your station with your partner in line; back and fill, and then fall on your heel, and bring up with your craft. She then manceuvres ahead of alongside of you; then make sail in company with her until nearly astern of the other line; make a stern board; cast her off to shift for herself; regain your place eut of the melee in the best manner you can, and let go your anchor.” —Chamber s Journal. = oe A Great Temperance Society. The Convention of the Catholic Total Abstinence Union of America, at St. Paul, Minnesota, opened on the 2nd inst. Rev. J. B. Cotter, President occupied the chair. The early business was of a routine charac ter, andafter it was transacted the dele- gates were escorted to the Cathedral, attended High Mass, and listened to the eloquent address of Right Rev. John Ire- land. In the afternoon, the report of the Rev. President on the Union was read, and showed an outlook of great promise. Then followed the reports of Presidents of Subordinate Unions. The reports, as con- solidated by the Secretary, showed a total of 9,951 societies, and 343,210 members in the Union, an increase since the Boston Convention of last year of about 8,000. The usual reports of the Treasurer and committees were made, and papers on in- temperance and the use of liquor were read. They were written by Bishop Keane, of Richmond, and Rev. J. O'Connor, 8. J., of Boston College. During the afternoon proceedings, Bishop Ireland appeared in the hall and received an ovation. A tele- gram of the 2nd to the Boston Herald says: “To night the city is ablaze with torch- lights and illuminations, and the delegates are being escorted in carriages through the city by the Catholic Societies of Minneso- ta in regalia, with bands and banners.” Waar 1s a Curistran Name? —Two months ago a woman brought a child to one of the. Anglican clergy in Toronto, and asked him to christen him Mahomet. He refused on the ground that in no way could that be looked on as a Christian name. The mother went off in high dudgeon and tried one of the Roman Catholic clergy, with a similar result. Two Presbyterian min- isters, one having a charge outside Toronto, acted in the same way. She returned to the first clergyman, and substituted David for the objectionable first name, and departed happy in the attainment of her object. It appears her husband, who is an agnostic, is a great admirer of the *‘Oamel driver of Mecca,” and had resolved on a new departure in the name line for his child. In the end, like a good hus- band, he gave in tc the wife’s request to have the styling of the young hopeful altered. «<> Special Notices. Go to L. E.
